;D Hey Matt,
I just spent about 18 hours going through all 34 pages on this audio board. All my questions have been answered ! And I just wanted to give a big thanks to you for posting all those comparison clips and keeping them online all this time.

So THANKS !!!!

Matt,
o.k. I do have one question. ;)
I can't figure out which rycote bbg/ jammer will work with my oktavas.
Also is there one that will also work with my at-4073.
I just ordered 2 ktek kssm shockmounts ... will that work with my AT as well.
Thanks in advance,
;D CAVEMAN

Re: Matt in STL ... thanks

Thanks for the props Caveman. The KSSM shockmount fits a lot of mics even though they advertise them for small mics only. With the soft bands I've used 'em on my Oktavas, a 416, 480b/ck63, and 4073a... with the larger diameter mics you gotta' stretch the bands just a bit, but it's no big deal and the mount holds everything tight. (When I got a brand-new Softie handle/mount/cover for my 4073a I realized something... We all think these companies provide this stuff with an EXACT science behind them... Well they DON'T! Rycote even says that the BBG will NOT work with an Oktava... when in fact it works PERFECTLY... and the mount they provide for a 4073a lets the mic FALL RIGHT OUT!)

The BBG you want is the 19-20mm and you can get it from Trew Audio or else email Cavell at www.rvacanada.com (RVA Canada) The Jammer is sold seperately and it's the furry "jacket" that slips over the BBG. When the BBG/Jammer combo is used, a mic like the Oktava is fully usable outdoors, even on a breezy day.

For shotguns like the 4073a you pretty much gotta' go with a Softie or else a full blimp system... the price of which, will make you faint.

All my shotguns use Softies and most of the time I get great results with those, but if I could afford the full blimps I'd have those instead.

Thanks for taking your time to help a brother out. :)

I know you like your mkh-416, but do you think I can get by with the 4073a and the oktavas for a while. Doing mostly narrative shorts.

Thanks again,

Re: Matt in STL ... thanks

Yeah, the 4073a should get you by for... um... forever. The extra things that a 416 does over a 4073a are matters of degrees... not differences. I think of a 416 as an evolved 4073a... rather then a totally different mic... and in a couple situations the 4073a would actually get the nod. (longer reach for equal settings). If these two mics were the same price then AT would never sell another 4073a again... at their respective prices they are both great mics but I don't think anybody's going to argue that the 416 is a really good "value". It's a great mic and you pay accordingly.

I'm probably going to buy another 4073a later this spring... it's still a really good mic and for the price I don't think there's a better value out there.
