Matrox MX02

Okay, time to start a new topic as the only other one for this hardware is in News, NAB 2008.

I'm about to start using my MX02, and want to know about audio monitoring with this piece of equipment.

I've looked in the manual, but I'm not getting the impression that there's a hardware capability to adjust audio levels when capturing video. *Edit* There isn't. The MX02 has normal, balanced (grounded) XLR inputs that are at +4 db, which seems typical of pro gear, and Matrox recommends 18 db of headroom (also common), so the recommended audio input level then for the tops of your metered peaks should be -12 db.

What I'm worried about is a hot output mic (Sennheiser K-6/ME-66) blowing out / clipping in the transmitted signal before it gets captured by FCP in a MacPro. *Edit* I got some bad info about the Sennheiser. Probably this issue regarding older equipment was the problem:
-Red Dotting microphones: "The XLR cables that connect the mic to the preamp or mixer have three pins, one of which is a ground, and older or used equipment can have the pins wired differently. Most new equipment is all standardized and shouldn't be an issue, but I've come across a few tech glitches and confusion based on this issue. Experienced pros carry with them a phase-reversing cable. "These are simply foot4ong XLR mike cables, with leads 2 and 3 switched in the connector at one end. One of these cables, inserted between the mike and power source, will correct any red-dot-to standard mismatch which could occur due to oversight or the last minute addition/replacement of equipment." "

Or, can the Matrox software tune the signal levels in the MX02 before it gets sent to the MacPro? If I need a field mixer, so be it. If not, it would be good to know. *Edit* Yup, you need a mic preamp or field mixer.

I'd also like to confirm that it would be better to run the XLR microphone output straight into the MX02 as opposed to running it through the camera (HPX170). *Edit* Camera preamps and monitors and AD converters (all built in) have apparently been getting better, but bypassing the camera will probably lead to better sound, even if it's potentially out of sync.

ps I have some questions about my audio workflow, and may have an overlapping post or too which I'd like to avoid, but can't. Thanks for any help.
