matching effect to a travelling mask

Forgive me if I don't have the correct terminology. Very new to After Effects.

My question: if I create a mask, and then animate its position (by changing the mask's Shape keyframes), how can I get a separate effect (Trapcode's Shine for example) to animate in accordance with the mask's movement? What I really want to do is have Shine's "source point" move in perfect conjunction with the mask's motion.

Any advice appreciated!

It would be easier to move the source point by hand, just drop some keyframes every 5 or 10 frames and adjust.
There is no way if I remember correctly (and it's late here), to link position keyframes to a mask since it's a... mask.
BUT you can convert a mask to keyframes from it's shape, but that is valid for 1 frame only, say you have a circular mask and convert it to keyframes you just get position keyframes that are a perfect circle.
So besides the 'by hand' way you can create a nice bezier mask that is the animated mask's motion path and convert it to keyframes and then link Shine's source point there.
Either way if you are animating the shape of the mask, it's position (motion) is not linked to it's shape.
Finally you can just move the layer that has the mask and link Shine there.
