Mastering TV from 24AP

Hey All -

I've got a program (a feature length movie) that was shot 24AP on a DVX100. I cut it on the correct advanced FCP timeline. Everything looks great whether it plays on an NTSC monitor, on a VHS dub or on a DVD dub. Now the program has been picked up by a major cable network (but not by a film distributor) and I have to deliver a finished master with closed captions.

Due to budget constraints (no capture card this time round), I have to send my program to a DVcam (Sony DSR-45) deck, then bump up the DVcam tape to Beta. Here's my question - after I put down my bars and tones etc., won't my timecode be off (again, the 23.98 timeline)? I wouldn't be starting at the official 1hr mark for NTSC world right? Or will the deck perform the proper pulldown as I lay back to tape?

My thought is that I'm trying to get my program to play "timecode" independant onto tape, while using the deck to generate the proper timecode. To that end one person suggested that I black out the DVcam tape before I record my program.

As you can see I'm a little lost with this. Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

My Best,

Gene

When you print to tape the 2:3 pulldown is added on the fly so your time is constant. It's done in FCP, not in your deck.
If you create a count down on a 23.98 timeline that is 10 seconds it will still be 10 seconds on regular video.
It's dumped to the tape as 29.97 so any dubbing is done just like any other video. If you can preset the timecode on the deck when you start laying it down you should be fine.

You've made my day. But let me make sure I'm understanding you correctly. When I edit/play my 23.98 timeline, FCP is putting the pulldown back on the fly so that it plays properly on an NTSC monitor. This same process happens when I lay the same program/timeline to a DVcam tape - meaning FCP is translating 23.98 into 29.97 on the fly and printing the program + 29.97 timecode onto tape. Assuming all goes well, I pull the the DVcam dub out of the deck and I have a standard, continuous, Drop Frame master that I can then bump upto Beta. I am US broadcast compliant as far as timecode goes.

Don't role your eyes but, could you clarify what you mean by presetting timecode on the deck? Can I do this via FCP? Because it is a firewire deck, does this make a difference?

Thanks for the insights - it's a big help

Yes, FCP adds 2:3 pulldown on playback. Make sure you check your playback prefs since it can be set to other configurations (especially if you have a slow machine)

I'm usually not concerned about timecode after editing. If you have a real deck it should be able to be configured to lay down a timecode while recording.

As with most things you best bet is to:
1. Check the Help menu in FCP
2. Run a short test. This way you know with your specific setup what you can expect.
