i bought a dvx 100 from a person who used panasonic professional use tapes. what would happen if i switched tapes to the master series? i dont want to screw anything up.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

If they were using the Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ Professsional tapes you have nothing to worry about. Like the MQ's, the PQ's are dry lube. So you can switch to the MQ's (Master) without any problems. Unless you're really sure of the history of the cam, I think it's always a good idea to have a used camera serviced and the heads, capstans, rollers, etc. cleaned. It only costs about $100 and the cost should be factored into the purchase of any used cam.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

If you go to the Panasonic web site, you can find a list of authorized service centers.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

what about the DVC linear plus tapes? will these harm a cam that has shot on pro tapes?
also panasonic

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

Stay with the PQ's they work great...I switched over to the MQ's and they work just as well...

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

You should check with Panasonic on the consumer (DVM60) tapes to see if they are Dry or Wet. That is the only thing you need to worry about, is mixing dry and wet lubes.

The MQ tapes are only a few pennies more than the PQ's, but have a huge increase in density to eliminate dropouts.

The PQ's and MQ's are dry, and so are Fuji tapes, Sony uses Wet lube and everything else you would hafta check.

Anoter advantage of the Mq's is they are white so if you want you can label right on the tape (if you have a problem with labels) and they also reflect sunlight so if you have them laying around in the sun for some stupid reason they wont get as hot as black tapes. You can also see them better in a deep ditty bag full of crap that you forgot to organize.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

Just the thread i was looking for. I was myself unsure if i should spend the extra pennies for the MQ rather than the PQ. How many do you think I should order off EVS? I'm planning 10 right now, but I'll probably go through them like a fat kid and his cake.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

You know what.. its one of those things you will always use so if you have the cash if you buy a case you get a special deal.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

The JVC tapes are a cheap version of the Panasonic tapes. They roll of the same production line and have almost the same model numbers... PQ for pro MQ for master. The only difference between them is the brand name they print on them and the price. :)

Oh yeah, as Jarrod said by them by the case. You get 50 (10 boxes of 5 tapes) in a case and it is considerably cheaper. You can off-set your costs by selling them to not so prepared friends and aquaintences. ;D
Y ou also know that you have a ready supply of tapes should a big job come up out of the blue.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

wait.. i have a jvc tape, just a consumer jvc tape, dvm60, if this is dry lube!!! this is awesome, i can use my dvx when it gets here. are the jvc consumer dv's are ok if pannny pro's have been run through the cam?

btw does anyone know yet if those DVC panny tapes are dry lube?

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

I can't be sure about the consumer ones but I can't imagine why they would be any different to the pro ones. Ever wondered why JVC and Panasonic stuff doesn't really compete with each other, their products target different areas of the market. They are effectively the same company as far as I know so I would be suprised if they use different methods and or facilities for tape manufacture.

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

Panasonic and JVC share a common corporate parent, but they are far and away different companies, from what I understand.

And I've had nothing but disastrous results with JVC tape. I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is really no good reason to use anything other than Panasonic MQ's. They're the best tape on the market, and they're only five bucks apiece (and some change) from EVS. Why gamble with anything else?

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

I'm not for a second saying they are the same company but they don't tend to compete against each other.
Anyway I have not had any problems with the JVC tapes. They are the same tapes just a different label.
Please don't bite my head off Barry :)

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

Sorry - no head-biting intended!! ;)

Hope I didn't come off too gruff. But I would be very surprised if the JVC and Panasonic MQ tapes were the same... I've had no luck with the JVC's.

I know they do occasionally share product (my DV deck is identical to a Panasonic model, other than the case) but I'd be surprised if the tape is the same.

Hope your head/neck heals well... :)

Re: master tapes and professional tapes

well, i just found my fuji tape, and it is exactly identical to the jvc tape in looks except it says fugifilm instead of JVC, uses the same product # dvm60
arnt fugi's the same as panasonic?

http://www.tapestockonline.com/

$5.33 each for the MQ tape if you buy 50, I think $5.25 for 100 or more. There use to be a larger discount for quanity but I think the MQ is in high demand and those discounts disappeared. They are a good company, but so is EVS, your call....

Oh, to add fuel to the fire the Maxell DVM60SE is also made by Matsushita Electric. The lowend Panasonic tape is OEM'd out to many people that then put there name on it... very common in the electronics industry. I however highly doubt they are the same tapes as the MQ or PQ, but they sure do look alike. That said, I only use MQ in my camara...lol
