massive FCP quitting problem...

I've never had any problems like this with FCP before then all the sudden, yesterday and today: whenever I'm capturing video (from DVX100b) - using the same settings for 24pA material I've used in that past without problems, the FCP "unexpectidly quits", shutting down the program.

now, I have a macOSX g5 witgh Tiger operating system and using FCP 5.1

what can I do to potentially fix this major problem? I checked online and two sites both said to try and delete the FCP. prefs file located in my library/application folder. ....but I don't want to do that just yet unless more people say thats the way to go.

anyone have this problem or know what to do? Thanks a bunch!

Do it.

Actually - use FCP Rescue to delete your prefs files, instead of doing it by hand.
I use it whenever I have an issue like this.
It will probably fix the problem.

If it does, once you get FCP up and running again and your preferences the way you like, make sure to use FCPrescue to backup your prefs files as well.
That way, if this happens again you can trash the corrupt ones and restore the stable files with all your preferences intact.

Good luck.

wow thanks. I'll try that out.
If it works, then Omega-thanks to you.

nope, it didn't work...

It's only when I capture....as soon as I log and capture, like 5-10 seconds into capturing it will "unexpecedly quit".

and I've tried a number of times...it always quits during capturing.

any other ideas? Or is there some other file I should delete?

Don't start getting 'delete happy'
:)

Obvious question here - but have you tried different tapes?
Is it quitting on every tape you have, or just one in particular?

Have you tried a different firewire cable?

Have you tried using 'capture now' as well as logging and capturing?

These things might help to narrow it down a bit.

I have tried different tapes, and I only have the one firewire cable as of now...so, can't try that unless I go buy a new one.

And I have tried the "capture now" mostly. and once logging and it quit during that aswell...

Hmmm....
Well, if you can get your hands on one, I'd try a different firewire cable first chance you get.

Other than that - are you capturing using a preset you made? If so, I would suggest shutting down the system, rebooting, opening FCP and going into the easy setup menu to choose your 24PA capture preset. I doubt it will make a difference, but you never know.

I'm starting to run out of ideas.
The thing that you need to be able to do is trace the problem back - you need to know whether its coming from the camera, the tape, the cable or the system.
Without troubleshooting those things, and ruling them out, you may wind up barking up the wrong tree for a while (ie. messing with FCP when its the cable that's the problem).

well, since I've never changed settings or anything on FCP in the past few months...and have captured stuff every week or so without problems. I think it could be the cable went bad....

that or....uh...well, if I knew I wouldn't have this problem would I? haha

...but the cable is my best bet. I'll buy a new one tomarrow. As the tape is the same kind of tape I always use, and I've tried other tapes as I said.

well, thanks for the help.

I'll be back if there's any furthur problem after this.

Actually - not sure what I was thinking - it's probably NOT the cable.
A bad cable would kill the capture, sure, but it shouldn't make the entire program unexpectedly quit. That just doesn't seem like it would make sense.

Honestly - I'm out of ideas...short of reinstalling FCP (which should be a last resort)

Have you been trying to capture in a preexisting project?
If so, you may want to try starting a new project and attempt to capture again... could be a corrupt project file (?) Maybe.

I've tried capturing in a brand new and an old project...same thing.

but I just noticed:

It only quits when I press "esc" to stop the capture (between scenes or at the end of what I want, etc...)

it 100% always quits when I press "esc" during capture.

...does that give you any ideas on what it could be?

by the way....how exactly do I use that FCPsaver program you linked me to?

I opened it and there's nothing I could do....everything's grey'd out.
and the FCP.prefs file is now gone, yet I did nothing.

Alright, rather then make a new thread again, I'll just post it here....

The problem remains after switching tapes and wires and using FCP rescue and all that...

and it's only when I hit "Esc" during a capture (like it tells you to do to stop capturing).
the program quits.

then when I open FCP rescue it says files are currupt. so I delete them and start over...sure enough, the same thing happeneds...then more currupt files, I delete them...etc...same problem

this is the worst. without the ability to capture footage...I'm obviously screwed.

any help?

by the way....how exactly do I use that FCPsaver program you linked me to?

FCPrescue.

First off, make sure you downloaded the right version.
There are different version for FCP 4, 5, and 6.

Also, make sure that FCP is closed completely before opening FCPRescue.

When you open it, you should have 3 buttons in the interface:
"Trash" - Deletes your prefs files
"Restore" - Restores prefs files that you have backed up
"Backup"- Backs up your prefs files

If you've never used the program before, then the 'Restore' button will be greyed out, because there is nothing backed up yet (so you can't possibly restore anything).

To backup your prefs files, all you have to do is hit 'BACKUP'
To delete your prefs files, all you have to do is hit 'TRASH'

The window at the top of the dialog box will always give you the status:
For example, "Settings are in place. Backup is safe"
(at least that's what mine says right now)

thanks, I used it and had the correct version.

...everytime my FCP would quit, the recue program would say settings are currupt.
...so I hit "trash" then it said what you'rs said that they are okay.

...but it fixed nothing as when I went back into FCP to capture...sure enough it'd quit.

Honestly, at this point I would seriously consider reinstalling FCP.
I'm not sure what the problem could be.
You might want to call Apple tech support.
