Masks cancel each other out...help

My original footage is a woman's face. I am trying to make her pupils flash red for a few frames (subtle)

I selected my footage and duplicated it to make another layer and then animated a mask to her pupil movement on the new layer. I created a red solid layer behind it so that it would shine through her pupil (properly feathered, and even masked back in the light reflection over it to give it depth, looks great)

The problem is I tried to do the same with the other eye (animated a mask to her pupil movement) but the new mask cancels out the old one so only one eye will work, if I hide the original mask, then the new eye works, and vice versa!

Please help!

Precomp it if you can't find a combination of masks that work. If you put 2 masks on the same layer it should work though. Maybe post a pic of the timeline...easier to see these things. You might be doing something wrong in the hierarchy.

be sure that the mode for both masks is set to "add" .. you should be able to use multiple masks on a layer no problem.

When I switch the mode to add, it just switches which eye shows up red.

Maybe I should change the size of the mask layers? If so, how do I do that? (like when you add a new solid layer, it asks what size you want it, should I some how change the size of each of those layers so they don't overlap)

I finally figured it out! I just need to make another mask in each layer so the transparency would go all the way through to the red solid layer! I'm still retarded.
