Masking?

Hey,

Can I make masks in Final Cut Pro? I know you can do it in After Effects, but I am using the 60i to 24p slowdown method on my 24p timeline, and Im scared if I go through After Effects I will screw up the frame rates. All I need to do is mask the video file in black and white, and then drop the same video file ontop and keep one subject in the clip color.

I am sure you can. I just figured out how to make "plates" today by accident but now I know how to do it I will use that effect the next time I need to create a lot of something and only have a little!

ive been screwin around with some of the filters for my FCP4.5, mostly the ones i dont know, but none of them are really what i need, the 8 point garbage matte is the closest thing to what I need, but I need way more then 8 points, Ill probably need about 16 to 26 points to do what I need to do. If anyone knows of any free filters I can get for this task, or how to expand the garbage mattes for more then 8 pojnts, it will help me alot.

Well last year I took a picture of Glacier and imported it in FCP and used a 8 point Garbage matte to cut the background and other elements in the image out. Now you know how rigid a glacier is right? You would think I would need more than 8 points but I was able to use the 8 points and then tweak it so all I saw on the screen was the one glacier all by itself. So with that said you may be able to do what you need to do.

It's painful enough to do in AE, FCP is even worse. Export your video and do the work in AE if you need more than 8 points and want real control.
Try a test section first if you're worried about the import/export process.

yea, Ill give it a try, I just have alot of problems when I shoot in 24p Adv mode and trying to keep the footage in true 24p throughout the entire process so that the end product is a 24p media file. It just complicates it that I shot a few shots in 60i that need the masking but have to be slowed down to 24p in FCP for slow motion. Just scared Im gonna do all the work in AE and then do the slow down in FCP, only for it to be screwy

do u know how to import a 60i file into AE, cause they ask you for framerate for the composition, and I don't know if I should put 60fps (since there is no selection for 60interlaced) or if I should put 30fps.

You shouldn't have problems with 24pa. Just use the presets for capture and edit.
60i = 29.97 in AE. Lower field first.
You could render your 60->24 conversion out of FCP if you wanted to cut down on the number of frames and to avoid re-rendering the 60->24 each time in FCP.

unfortunately I can't use my conversion in FCP cause my FCP is a little screwey, I can't even export Mpeg-2's - Ill give that a try though - I had actually started messing with it at 30fps, and it worked well, I will try 29.97 and see if there is much difference, thanks scottdvx00
