geez... i thought FCP usually ships with a manual and some help files.... ;D
It does. People are just lazy to read them all.

Re: Masking 4:3 for 16:9

BTW -- here's the best way to search for help:

Find the FCP HD icon and Right-Click (control-click) it and Show Package Contents:

contents/Resources/English.lproj (or what ever your language is, I guess)/Final Cut Pro Help/

Select all the contents -- 5 or so pdfs.

Apple-I to open their info boxes

Turn down the Open with: triangle

Change from Adobe to Preview.

Open one of the files and type matte into the search -- see how fast it comes up with stuff!!!

Good luck,

Re: Masking 4:3 for 16:9

For best results adding a letter-box, just add two black colored mattes. Crop one from the top and one from the bottom to creat to black bars. This way, you can move your video underneath them to make perfect framing.
P.S. You can throw the matte filter on your video first as a guide and then make the black boxes.

Re: Masking 4:3 for 16:9

You can also set up a custom "frame" in, say, Photoshop, then import it as a Luma (or Alpha, doesn't matter) "travel matte" which will likewise allow you to pan & scan underneath it to your heart's content.

Beware, my son, and do not sin as I sinned... make sure you apply this as the last step in your editing process, or your keyframes will cause your footage to jump wildly about if you change the length of any clip...
