mask (matte) question

Here's a link to the format I'm using.

I want to move the video under the matte. If you look at my youtube clip, I have a matte at the bottom right that surrounds my right hand and I have the matte preset saved but sometimes I need to make adjustments to the video that is being masked. The only way I can figure out to do this is to adjust the matte handles by hand. Instead, I want the matte to stay in one place and the video to slide underneath the matte.

Or, an alternative would be to be able to drag the matte(mask) to a different position in the video and then I can "motion" drag the entire video to where I want the (un)masked image to appear.

Depends on what software you are using. This is a basis function of most NLE's and Special FX software, so it most likely is covered in the manual.

in pp2.0 i just added a transparent video layer above my footage, and added the Clip function to that. Add the black bars, and now you have footage you can reframe up and downwards without affecting the black bars.

in PP3.0, the clip function has disappeared, forcing me to create a new Title, and in the titler i just created black rectangular boxes ( using a 2.35:1 image as reference ) and saved that title as 2.35 matte for 16x9.

Interesting. I didn't know you could do that with the title function. I'm using PP3.0 so i'll give that a try.

Hi,

Yep.

You can use image mattes and use a part of layer of psd file of Photoshop, too, and layer sequences which looks like it might work with what you're wanting to do.

Nice work. I'm liking your site a lot. I've leaving on vacation for a couple of weeks today and will return after the first. Will visit your site a lot then.

Good luck!

Happy Holidays!

for making a complex non moving layer with transparent portions, you can just use photoshop as your best option. the issue with his project here is that he has multiple layers of video underneathe the black "boxing" layer so if he moves one layer it will slide under the black boxing layer, but will slide OVER the other video layers that it is arranged on top of. CS3 has a track matte effect, you can use this to generate a stabile matte for a layer from a secondary matte layer which does not have to be visible. heres the help info:

The Track Matte Key reveals one clip (background clip) through another (superimposed clip), using a third file as a matte that creates transparent areas in the superimposed clip. This effect requires two clips and a matte, each placed on its own track. White areas in the matte are opaque in the superimposed clip, preventing underlying clips from showing through. Black areas in the matte are transparent, and gray areas are partially transparent.

..but even using track mattes, when your working with multiple layers of video your going to run into overlap of layers from the generated black area outside of the track mattes. of course if you just need to slip one single layer underneath the matte you can juat put it under all other layers in order, so yu can move it all you want and just use a photoshop frame to slide it under. but otherwise you should really be doing this in AE.

i'll have to download the trial of AE and see if it's worth the money for the one feature I'll use. LOL.

Thanks Neil.
