Martin Scorsese's letter to Francesca and the future of cinema

"You can get beautiful images with affordable cameras. You can record sound. You can edit and mix and color-correct at home. This has all come to pass."

This is what I thought about it. How many movies have you seen that were great in every way, EXCEPT for the quality of the footage because of the camera?

What I believe is the most expensive part of making a movie, people. That's still just as expensive as it ever was. Not only people, but the things that go in front of the camera like sets, make up, wardrobe, production value like shooting in a football stadium, or the incredible price of believable CGI.

If yuo don't have a budget for those things, and also a great camera man, a good DP, key grip, etc., cheap cameras and lights aren't going to make up for it.

Also I haven't seen a lot of really good directors that are also really good colorists, and really good editors. In cinema people specialize in something for a reason, rather than do a little bit of everything.

Can you be a colorist in post production, and be a director, and be the key grip, and be the director of photographer, and the wardrobe person, and the camera AC, and the DIT, and the editor? Sure. But you're probably not going to do those jobs as well as someone that is ONLY doing one of those things. And hiring people that are really good at those jobs has always been the majority of any Hollywood budget, not the camera rentals.

Can you get people to work for free? Sure, but not so many people want to be a key grip for free, especially if they are good at it.
