Marshall Monitor Flickering Problem

I just purchased the Marshall V-R70P-HDA, and the first time I connected it and plugged it in, it has these random flickering lines. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this, if it's normal, or if I should send it back.

I using it with the HVX and M2. I figured that it might be the 1080i out that is making this occur. When I use color bars/blue gun, or switch inputs (without anything plugged in, just blue screen), the flickering lines go away. It only does this in component mode (Pr Pb Y).

Any help would be great.

I've had this problem. It's definetly frustrating. Here's a brief recap. I send it to Marshall. They upgrade software. They say it's fine now. I get it back. I still have flashes. I send it back. They do something else. They say it's fine now. I get it back. I still have flashes. Marshall says "Can you send the camera with the monitor so we can see? Because we're only having this problem with the HVX." I suck it up. Send the camera and monitor. Marshall tells me I have a bad cable. Bad cable? I ask, "Which one, because I sent you two?" I get camera and monitor back. I have no bad cable(s) cables work fine. But I still have flashes. Frustrating, yes.....BUT...Here's what I've figured out. Those flashes seem to only happen for the first few minutes that the monitor is on and seem disappear after the monitor has been "warmed up." This has been MY experience. I can't say that THAT is what is causing the flashes. I'd say contact Marshall. Talk to Bernie. Here's the number 1-800-800-6608. Ext 144. Purdy Romero will answer....tell her Mark from Kentucky says "Hi Purdy."....:):)

hmm...for me, it seems to not flicker when I first turn it on, but then starts flickering after a minute or two. Weird. I don't know if I want to send it in, after hearing your story. I guess I'll give them a call. Thanks.

My Marshall monitor is in for the second time right now. When I connected the monitor up to my Comcast HD box I got the flickering too, so I'm not sure it's isolated with the HVX.

I thought I could live with the flickering, but after shooting with it, I think you'll discover that it's VERY distracting.

Well, it seems that a lot of HVX users are working with this monitor, and I don't see anyone complaining of any flickering. I's so frustrating paying $1,500 for a flicking monitor. Should I try to get it fixed, or just deal with it? It seems futile to send it in, if they are just going to send it back, still messed up.

Had this problem with a rented monitor on a recent shoot. Annoying, yes, but it was hardly critical as far as I was concerned. If I owned the equipment, yes, I'd probably want it fixed.

Also have this issue. I have connected my HVX up to a Bravia HD LCD via the exact same component cable and the picture is perfect, so I can only assume this is a Marshall problem.

I'm in the UK so its a much bigger deal to send in, please can those that have done so keep us up to date on any positive developments.

Thanks
Mark

does every HVX/Marshall user have this problem? If someone is using this monitor with the HVX and is problem-free, can you let me know. I wish i would have heard about this before I purchased it.

ESS...there was someone here that had the problem and apparently had it rectified. They actually took their camera to Marshall and had them adjust the monitor while they were standing there. There's another thread somewhere with their, and the beginning of my problems.

When I use my monitor on batteries, it flickers as the battery runs low. This leads me to speculate that the monitor is very sensitive to voltage under 12 VDC. If the problem happens on the power supply that comes with the unit, I would switch it to battery to see if that solves the problem. If it does it would point to voltage issues.

Since this is an issue that is inconsistent it may indicate that the voltage regulator on the units that flicker needs to be adjusted upward. Only read further if you are electronically inclined:

The first thing I would check is the voltage on the power supply that comes with the unit (little black box). Pins 1&4 should have 12 VDC min. Mine checked out at 12.23 VDC

Most regulator circuits have a potentiometer that can be adjusted. Only the knowledgeable should attempt to open the monitor and search for this control (usually near the regulator circuit). You should use a meter to read the voltage after the regulator. With the unit on, I would incrementally increase the voltage by turning the trimmer potentiometer. A one volt increase would unlikely do any harm. If the flicker goes away, you have nailed your problem. Many times there is a piece of sticky paper or paint covering the regulator potentiometer to keep people from messing with it. I have lost count of how many times I have removed the covering to get at this control. It is surprising how often I find the voltage to be incorrect coming out of the power supply. I do not know the correct specified voltage. You would have to check with Marshall to get that. If you do not find a potentiometer, then the regulator is controlled by a resister. If that is the case, I would not bother messing with it unless you know what the voltage should be.

Thanks for the link. The thing is, I sent my marshall back to B&H today to get it replaced. I guess if it is still messed up, I need to talk to marshall and have the modify it. Thank you all for helping me out. Much appreciated.

Ok, so it has to be specifically set up for the HVX. Anyone have the contact details for the right person to talk to at Marshall about this? I'm hoping they have a service centre in the UK that can make the mod rather than having to ship it across the pond and great expense. Thanks.

....Call 1-800-800-6608.... Ext 144 will get you Purdy Romero....ask Purdy if you can speak to Bernie regarding your issue.

Ouch. What is a cost effective alternative to the Marshall?

I may need to get a monitor later this year for things I can't do with DV Rack, like fast camera moves. :D

I better email this thread to Marshall Tech to see if they can apprise us HVX users or show interest in our concerns. Thanks for the heads up on this issue guys.

When I first ordered my Marshall monitor, I had this problem. I sent it back to Marshall and they replaced the monitor. To the best of my recollection, they told me it was a bad board inside. And I haven't had a problem since.

I sent an email to Marshall about the flicker problem and this is their favorable response.

"As of today, our engineers have found the solution to the intermittent flashing you have heard about on the V-R70P-HDA monitor. The solution lies in a chip-level fix, which should be confirmed in the next day or so. We will gladly perform the fix for any current users experiencing this problem, and will ensure that all monitors shipped from now on are free of this problem.

I highly recommend this monitor for your camera setup (it is a very popular configuration). We do not have a service center in Australia, but if you should ever have any service needs in the future we will be happy to accommodate them despite the distance. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

I hope this helps guys, and it is ok for me to publish the content of an email. Good to know, as I may look at getting one of these monitors at the end of the year.
