Marking the best clips

I was wondering if there is a way to put a "mark" on clips you like on the timeline.

Say you are looking at 20 takes of the same action and wanted, as you view them to "mark" the ones that strike you as better than the others... Can you do that in the timeline?

I have been using the "mute" switch and also timeline markers but seems there should be a better way?

I usually just drag them to a separate track, so I know that everything on that track is likely to be good stuff.

I wish you could colour individual clips. Right now I create three or four tracks, and sort them according to usefulness (best clips to the top).

The nearest thing to what you're looking for is to edit the full clip in the "trimmer", then mark or region the part you like. However that only works for long clips, and you have to load them into the trimmer to find the part you like.

The marker marks the timeline, not the clip, except in trimmer. When you move the clip the marker won't move with it.

However, the clip shows a tiny orange line if you mark it in the trimmer.

If you choose View>Active Take Name, you can see the take names on the clips. You can change the name of a take without changing the name of the source file by right-clicking, choosing "Properties," then changing the name in the "Active take name" box -- you can choose "Keep" or something like that -- whatever works for you.

That could work but still seems a long about way to mark a clip. We need vegas to come up with a "MARK CLIP" where you can simply click on the clip and it gets a red check mark :)...

May the universe be listening!

I did do the marker thing, it works well because you can use that function to make notes. When you make the marker it opens a box to enter the name, but you can enter whatever you want, in my case I would enter stuff like: "best performance but focus a little off" for ex. I would note my clips that way until I was ready to move them to their final destination.

Usually I place all the clips on timeline, but RIGHT of where the final mix will be (so about 5 min into the timeline) then as I start my "mix" I drag the wanted clip to the beginning of timeline one after the next.

It works good.

if you're looking at individual clips (note FCP only to my knowledge)

you can click ON the clip and hit your marker button. this puts a dot on the clip where the timeline marker is currently set.

for one long clip i use this to scan and make 'dots' on 'areas' of the clip i like.

it definitely helps to move clips on track, etc. though, because you can lose sight of your goal if you get 'mark' happy...

I've sometimes added a 'hidden' track containing generated media of a solid green. I then minimise the track, leaving just a thin bar of colour visible, and stretch/shrink/copy the generated media to cover all the shots I consider 'complete'. So the entire track slowly turns solid green as you complete more and more scenes/shots. It does give a sense of progress, and prevents 'did we fix that bit or not?' panic
