Marketing yourself as a videographer.

One of the biggest hurdles I am trying to jump as a videographer/editor/producer is that of marketing myself and my business. I was wondering if any of those of you that have been in this industry much longer would be nice enough to share the secrets you have used to market yourselves. What kind of marketing have you found that works and what doesnt work? Magazine or newspaper ads? Web? word of mouth? I have been playing a little with web marketing, but it certainly doesnt have people knocking down my door. Anybody in the sharing mood?

Word of mouth and NETWORKING is probably the best way. You can always pay to have an ad in the Yellow Pages. All you need is a few GOOD jobs and then those people you did work for tell someone else about your skills then they call you for work and before you know your work is doing the marketing for you. Lets say you want to shoot some weddings...well you could always pay for a booth or vendor table at a BRIDAL SHOW set up a little TV monitor and have your work looped over and over on that monitor...pass out business cards, flyers, etc. It really depends on what kind of production your going to be in. For me, I do a lot of Music Video work so I am always going to Talent shows scouting new talent...A lot of these artists/groups are not signed to record deals but they have managers that will pay to have a video shot or other video work done. The main thing is to NETWORK!!!! One good thing that I have going for me is that I have been shooting News/Sports/Entertainment for a Network TV station for almost 10 years. When I tell people who I shoot for, they are impressed just with that! They haven't even seen my work yet! I am going to be starting my business this summer so I will be in the same boat with you but I already know how I can go after possible clients.

A lot of Churches want their services taped. A friend of mine made a bundle of money shooting church services that would air on the local WB station when I lived down in VA. Keep your options open...there is money to be made out there! :)

Re: Marketing yourself as a videographer.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions dvx100shooter. As I sit right now I have been doing work on and off for a couple years, but this month it has started to take off and Im trying to figure out how I'm going to keep the ball rolling. I have a concert shoot this weekend and another lined up right behind that one. After that things get a little blurry. I'm not really interested in weddings at all, actually I avoid them at all costs. Something about the risk of not having a second chance if you screw up and miss the vows or something. These days I'm focusing on putting together electronic press kits for bands and its going well. Im just trying to figure out how to market to bands who are serious and actually have the money that it costs to produce these kinds of things. Everytime I do one I get pretty good response and interest from other bands, but that sometimes takes months to get another one going. any suggestions? anybody done anything ground breaking or off the wall to get new clients?

Word of mouth has primarily been my spread. Have a good demo dvd of your work and a site. Brand yourself really well (site, cards, stationary, etc).
