Marketing a HOT commercial

How do you market a commercial, to let's say major company, kind of like the budweiser "wassup" commercial?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Marketing a HOT commercial

It is nearly impossible. The companies will not speak to you directly, you have to go through their ad agencies. Companies sign exclusive agreements with ad agencies and it is the agency that is exclusively allowed to supply (and responsible for supplying) all advertising used by the company.

And the ad agencies typically do not want to talk to outside submissions, because a) if they use an idea similar to yours, they will have to deal with you suing them, and b) if your idea is better than theirs, it makes them look bad... after all, they're being paid millions of dollars for their creative ideas.

But if you want to pursue it, call the company and find out who their advertising agency of record is, then call that agency and find out who the account rep for that company is, and make your pitch.

Good luck!

Make sure you protect your idea by copyright or "poorman's copyright" as well if you are going to submit your work to a major company. Like what was said, they most likely will not deal with you so going to the ad agency will be your best bet.

Another thing you could do is, produce a show for local programming, then go and shoot your own commercials to air during your show. Who knows maybe some of the big boys might send their ad people to you if they see something they like! But they are being paid big money for their creative ideas so I doubt they will come running unless your doing something incredible!

Re: Marketing a HOT commercial

An ad agency is NOT going to buy any ideas from people who do not work there. It is a policy. That's why we creatives have jobs.
The "Wassup" commercial originally was a short film. The Creative director of the campaign just happened to be watching this film and liked it so much that he hired the Director/writer/actor to re- shoot it in a 30 second format. It looks just the same. The only actor they kept was the principal, who happens to be the Director as well.
If you want to be a commercial director you can get your spec reel together by shooting spec spots. Then you go to a commercial production house and try to sell it to them, hoping that they'll represent you. It sound seasy, but it's one of the hardest things to do. I'm going to put my reel together with the DVX, with Ideas that have died during the process.

Another example of this was the "Moon Song", which Quizno's co-opted and had them re-write into "We love the subs!"

Absolutely brilliant. Short-lived campaign though, because I guess squashed hamsters with distorted-tooth-people-mouths don't sell food all that well...

Yeah that made me never want to eat there again...

Re: Marketing a HOT commercial

.. i just sat there trying to comprehend what sort of creature it was.. i settled on it bieng a mouse.. and the thought that mice would like to eat the subs didnt appeal to me... :) funny though. and memorable

Re: Marketing a HOT commercial

I blame Jonah Goldberg. He posted a link to the original Moon Song in The Corner (NRO Blog) several months ago, and that's probably how word got out.

Re: Marketing a HOT commercial

Still thought it was absolutely brilliant. I love how the advertising world thinks one way, and somebody comes in and stands it totally on its head. "We can only show beautiful people"... Oh yeah? How 'bout some 2-D squashed hamsters with gross lips and teeth?

C'mon, how many of you were singing "We love the subs" and "They've got a pepper bar"?

Re: Marketing a HOT commercial

i was singing ;D ! my wife would just sit there shaking her head at me, and saying.."those things are gross!".. i just thought they were hilarious. but still gross.. lol

I'm a huge fan of off-the-wall comedy, etc. but associating dead rodents with food is disgusting.

Suffice to say I haven't eaten at Quizno's in months because of that campaign.
