Marantz PMD661

I know this is an older post but I'm wondering about the same thing. It seems good. I was thinking of maybe buying early next year? Anyone else think the pmd661 is good too?

I just received mine (with the Oade Brothers SUPER mod). So far, I think it's a nice upgrade from the Zoom H4N for sure. I'll work up a full review with audio samples next week.

I've been using one with the Oade Super Mod for a few months. Its got lots of nice features for the money and its not too large. Very easy to use as well. Get it modded by Oade for sure. Worth the little bit of extra money.

Bernie,

Any additional tips/tricks for getting the best sound out of the PMD? I've thumbed through the manual a few times, and I'll be spending some time this weekend getting up to speed with all the features, but any leads would be appreciated.

The machine is pretty intuitive and the manual isn't bad but here are a few thoughts.
You have three presets that you can configure and save. I set up one for transcription(122kps MP3), one for hi rez internal mic recording (24 bit 48k), and a third for recording with external mics (24 bit 48k). Its a small time saver. Also, don't leave the headphone volume up while recording if you don't have phones plugged in. Sound will come out the speakers. The headphone/speakers aren't very loud but could cause you leakage problems.
The mounting thread on the bottom is handy to attach this to a tripod or stand for accurate placement. I've really only used it three or four times so far have been pleased so far.
Best,
Bernie
