Marantz PMD-670

Hi all,

For those considering the PMD-670, I just found a great add-on companion for it. Archos makes an MP3 player called the gmini-220 that has a compact flash slot on it along with its 20GB hard drive. You can copy files off of the CF onto the hard drive very easily. It gives you a quick and easy back up for your CF rather than lugging a notebook computer on location with you. You can hook it up to a PC or Mac and it looks just like a hard disk to the computer, so you just copy your files and either burn a CD or load the files directly into your NLE. (I got mine at Good Guys, on sale for $249. I'm sure there are better deals out there, but this is a pretty good deal by itself.) This unit is slightly wider and shorter than an Ipod, so it will travel very well.

Re: Marantz PMD-670

Thanks for the tip. I just bought the Marantz PMD-670 online and I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

Re: Marantz PMD-670

Terry,

I got mine two weeks ago, and I love it.  I'll post a more complete review later, but I have already found one quirk -- the manual says that if you press record, it automatically creates a new track (in the right mode).  Well, if you're doing multiple takes, and you use the pause button between takes and then press record once to start it again, a new track is not created.  You have to hit record twice to get the new track.

Boy, one thing I found hard to adjust to is not waiting a couple of seconds before reporting "speed", basically, once you hit record you're there.  ;-)

HTH,

Phil,

Thanks for the tip on the 'new track' thing. I am eager to try it with my other Christmas present (from me to me)... the Sound Devices 302 mixer.

Re: Marantz PMD-670

Terry,

Hope you enjoy!

My set up is a bit different...I go from the mic to the Azden FMX-20 (primarily now used so the boom op can listen and boom...not really used for mixing). From there I go to the mixer, and then into the PMD-670. After tuning all of the levels, I got great results on a test shoot we did for the new feature I'm starting (sound design and recording/mixing).

I ran an interesting test on the sound files from the shoot. I took them all into Vegas, layered in room tone/ambient sound and did a really rough 5.1 mix, then burned it to a DVD and listened on my home THX system. It sounded really good (clearly needs tweaking in many areas). But, for a rough test, it worked. Anyway, let me know how your experience goes.

Happy Holidays,

Phil
