Map Animation

I'm doing an animation like an indiana jones type thing with a red line going across the map but in one segment they end up going to the moon. I've been messing around with photoshop and AE for a bit and haven't come up with something that looks like the line is actually coming off the map.

any suggestions?

You couold a 3D program such as 3DS Max. Create a plane, drop your map on it as a texture. Lay out a spline path the way you want your red line to go. Then, create a box and do an animated extrude along a path using your spline as the path. If you wanted to use a dashed line you use an animated distribute along a path with a dash shape.

Hope this helps

i'd make a dropshadow appear and have it coincide with the line changing direction upwards. then have the map slowly scale down..

Wouldn't a line representing a path to the moon be straight up? That's the rub. For the flat animation the perspective is probably looking straight down on the map from above. In order to see a line traveling from the map to the moon the position of the camera would need to change. This can be accomplished in AE's 2.5D space but it would be quite tricky. You need seperate line segments - one for the flat travel along the surface of the map and one line that went to the moon. The line that goes to the moon should be rotated in 3D space to simulate traveling on a different plane. Then animate the position on the camera to give the viewer the perspective that the line is traveling straight up.

As retaff99 said you could do it with a 3D app.

Otherwise have you thought about running at it a different way. Animate the line along the map and when it's time to go to the moon do qwik snap Z out to show the earth and moon and then animate the red line from the earth to the moon. IMO, this is the shortest route to achieve the effect.
