Before I show you what I made ​​last week in my hobby workshop, let me explain a few things. I'm a cameraman in Austria in a private channel. Since the work is unfortunately not varied, I began several years ago to be interested in tools. The final consequence to me was buy a workshop in which I own a lathe and a milling machine.
So last week, a colleague came to me and asked me if I can rebuild his follow focus for his ENG camera.
The problem was that I did not know which module the size of a Canon zoom ring gear has.




Meanwhile, I'm so smart and have already made ​​these gears in Pom plastic.
The diameter of all the gears is 36 mm.

I done it with a Milling Machine and old fashioned analog. Here one more Picture of the Production.



If you want to do it per CNC, there exists in the Web a program which generate a DXF File for cutting Gearwheels

From what I can gather at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyoxymethylene, "POM" is also known as "Delrin" (a popular plastic for gears in the US), and "Hostaform/Celcon" in Europe.

The Reason why this Material ist very popular for gearsmaking, is that POM has very good Sliding properties. A Combination of Alu to Alu is not so good.
So the most FollowFocus drive wheels are made with POM and the Lensgears on Cine Optics are in Aluminium.

But I can also made some gearwheels in Alu, this one is wider than the normal one:
