Manufacturing and Distribution.. Where to go?

Yes. I have been doing this for 16 years now. What are looking for and what do you need to know?

That is great! Do you happen to do these in house or have a professional company do them for you. As most replication services do require PHILIPS licensed manufacturers to manufacture them.

We use outside replication houses that are licensed... We did use a NYC replicator in 2007 for a project and found out later that they weren't licensed. They were sued and shut down. That's why their prices were so darn good...

I know what you mean, I have worked with a few replicators as well who gave me very cut throat prices, only to find out they were not legally licensed to manufacturer media. Struck me by surprise. If you don't mind me asking, what is the turn time and price for 1000 units? Are there any hidden fees? Do they also have the capability to package and handle the fulfillment of products?

We have used more than a few guys over the years... some of them do fullfillment. Turn around time is usually a couple of weeks. No hidden fee's. You get a price per unit either packaged or on spindle. Whatever your requirements. Most can even provide the printing and design of your cover and disc artwork. But that will add to the cost. Where are you located?

Wait I'm a little confused by this... what do you need to license? The DVD-Video Patent would have expired somewhere in 2005-2008, because patents only last 10 years.

EDIT: My mistake, it expires between 17 and 20 years depending upon if it was registered before 1995 or not.

Yes the DVD replicator has to pay a license fee to replicate... As of 2008 I know of a replicator that was popped and sued for a couple of million...

Discmakers is a big name in replication, and they do a decent job. But the business plan of all these outfits is to suck you in with a bargain basement deal, and then upsell. They seem to charge extra for stuff that seems like it should be included with any package. Anyone want to buy a car without the tires?

I have used discmakers on 6 dvd replication projects. The key to dealing with them and I assume others, is to know exactly what you want as far a options. Their DVD replication packages and pricing can be pretty complete. Where they can nickle and dime you is if you have not prepared your artwork correctly to their specs or you make changes once it is in the manufacturing pipeline. They provide encoding and artwork services for those that choose not to DIY, but I think it is a little pricy. Otherwise, $999 for 1,000 discs retail ready is a pretty good deal. Add a bar code and shipping and it comes to under $1,200. Overall I have been happy using them and have never had a report from customers of a "bad" DVD. The only problem I have had was a printing issue on may last project with them where the DVD case cover did not match the colors in my original artwork. Although they had sent me an electronic proof that I had approved, the final product was way off and unacceptable to me. They agreed to pay return shipping on the DVDs and reprint the cover. Turn a round time was about 7 working days. My lesson learned was ALWAYS request a printed proof on actual cover stock in the future.
Hope this helps.....
