Manually adjusting pulldown pattern in Vegas?

Howdy, I have a weird problem. I was given some footage that was shot 24Pa. Strangely enough when I put it on the timeline with the same projects settings I'm seeing interlacing every 2 or 3 frames. The clip properties are correct, indicating that it is infact removing the 2-3-3-2 pulldown.

For the heck of it, I brought the clip into After Effects and upon loading the clip into AE, the remove pulldown pattern was WSWWW, but still appeared interlaced. After going into the Interpret Footage panel and hitting the Guess 24Pa Pulldown button, the true pulldown pattern was indicated as WWSWW. I scrolled thru the footage and it looked solid with no interlacing as it should have. All the footage captured seemed to be consistently off by 1 field.

- SO, that all being said, is there a way in Vegas Pro 8 to manually override the pulldown pattern being used or atleast a selecting an offset?

Oh yeah, I guess I should mention that the footage on the DV tape was actually a copy of the original. I don't know if the copy was made from deck to deck or if first loaded into a computer then later outputted.

Thanx for any insight!

You probably have it on an NTSC or 29.97 timeline. Pulldown is only removed on a 24p timeline. You don't want it to be removed on a 29.97 timeline.

I wish it was that simple, but my project timeline is set to accomodate the 24pa ntsc footage as I first indicated. Technically it would be 23.976 (IVTC Film). My other 24pa footage from looks fine on this same timeline too.

Yeah, but is that setting for the project, or is it just the ruler (where you see the IVTC Film tag)?

Try this -- create a new project using the 24p DV template. In the Project settings, go to the Ruler tab and make sure it's set to 23.976. See how it looks on that.

If the media properties say it has removed the 2-3-3-2 pulldown from the clip, then it should be OK. But if it's a copy of footage, it's possible that the cadence is somehow off. Would have to know exactly what was done to copy the footage.

Hey David, thanx for that detailed walk thru. Same problem. I generally use one of the standard DV templates depending on the footage or final output; in this case I want to maintain the properties of the footage. I actually never played around with the Ruler thing before. In the Project Properties under the Frame Rate, is where I had gotten the IVTC tag. I have an about 70min of a project already edited with no problems, so this particular footage has thrown me off.

This is exactly what I'm thinking the pulldown pattern (or cadence as you mention) is some how offset, I'm thinking it must have been thru the copying process. I was recently notified that it was captured thru Premiere and the timeline was output to the tape that I now have. I don't know the specifics other than that though. Like I mentioned, even when I load the clip in After Effects, the assumed cadence is wrong. To correct it, I have to manually choose or press the "Guess 24pa" button to eventually identify the correct cadence. This works, BUT I've 3 hours of footage to deal with.

SO, that brings me back to the question, is there a way to adjust the cadence of a clip or an event in Vegas? Thanx for your help!

No, because the cadence is set when the footage is created. There's no way to rearrange the fields. Now, you can change 24pA to 24p standard and vice versa, but it requires removing pulldown first.

There probably isn't a way to fix this in Vegas -- but you can try right-clicking on a clip in the media pool, going to File Format Properties, and choosing "Remove Pulldown." You can manually set the A-frame there. No guarantees that the option won't be greyed out, or that it will actually work if it's available.

Thanx for mentioning that option, which I have never noticed (mainly because it is often greyed out); I looked into the File Format Properties option. This would definately be the solution if the clips were 24P which the Vegas docs do explicitly specify, BUT unfortunately I'm using 24PA, so the option is greyed out. Darn. So close. Seems strange that they offer the option for one but not the other. Oh well. I appreciate your help!
