Manhatten Beach, Long Beach, or Somewhere else

Charli

cool little "title"
I love love Santa Monica but alas, it's finally time to leave. It's a RENTER'S Market out there and I can get into a place for half the rent with better ammenities, put in our notice on Monday and have no idea where we are going.

I was wondering about further south.

Manhatten Beach - is this a place you can walk to theaters, eateries and stuff or is it all about driving?

Long Beach - same question, can you walk the town more to get to places or is it spread out?

I am looking for a small town that would be cool to live but not down as far as San Diego. That's too far away from L.A. for me.

With foreclosures, preclosures there are houses and apartements that are not checking credit, that are asking for only a 2 week despoist, some no depsoits, some all utilities paid - and I'm not talking DUMPS here, nice places sitting empty.

I hate to say it, but the economy the way it is, now is the time to take advantage and move while the lessor is desperate for renters.

Any ideas, suggestions is helpful. I'd like to say near the coastline, but doesn't mean I have to be on the beach.

If you're been to Manhatten, Long Beach, Huntington, around there, love input.

Thanks in advance.

I would probably suggest Manhattan Beach. I'm not too familiar with the area south of Venice but, I remember having lunch with a friend in Manhattan Beach in a small beach town. EVERYBODY was walking, very bohemian. Looked like a great place to live. Not sure if its expensive to live there. Another bonus with Manhattan Beach is that a lot of entertainment companies have their offices there, and its not as far as Long Beach.

As for Long Beach, depending on where you are in the city, it can get kinda scary. The city itself feels more spread out. The other downside to is that it is really far from LA. 40 or so minutes without traffic. Add the 405 freeway traffic and you're looking at a good hour and half commute. I went to Long Beach a couple of times (the rough areas) and never really had a good time there so I might be a bit biased.

Huntington Beach is GORGEOUS! Total surfer town. Everybody walks, surfs, wears next to nothing during the summer. AWESOME. If your a surfer, Huntington Beach has some amazing waves and clean water. My only problem with Huntington Beach is the distance. Its about 10-15 minutes further than Long Beach. I used to surf there on special occasions with friends and I've always had an awesome time there.

Hopefully this helps. I hope you find a great place soon!

Dang - yes the information is MOST helpful and thanks for taking the time to tell me.

I'd avoid Long Beach. One of my relatives was doing a real estate deal there and was harassed by a bunch of hoodlums before he entered her house.

Luckily they left the area because a cop car showed up.
