Manfrotto tripod, bowl, 501 head issue

This is probably a long-shot, but if resolved, could save me purchasing a new tripod. A friend of mine gave me an old Manfrotto 3445 carbon tripod with 75mm bowl, along with a 501 fluid head. The only thing he was missing was the half-ball leveler. Anyway, I tracked it down and purchased it--seen here (http://www.manfrotto.us/75mm-half-ball-leveler-with-3-8-screw-for-75mm-bowl-tripods). However, the bolt from the half ball does not reach down far enough to grab the leveler underneath the tripod.

On the right of this diagram http://mediacdn.shopatron.com/media/mfg/2747/media_document/live_2/442_20010829.pdf?1287563553 you can see the half ball and the bowl. The "neck" of the bowl seems to be too long for the bolt to protrude far enough down to reach the leveler.

Does anyone know where I might find a replacement bowl or any other solution to allow my 501 head to couple with the leveler?

Thanks a lot for any help. A bit of a newbie with this suff.
