Manfrotto & Satchler plates compatible!?!

One of our cameraman used a Manfrotto 504PLONG, or 501PLONG, camera plate on a Satchler FSB-8 head the other day, & it seemed perfectly compatible, but I didn't test the setup for myself.

I use a variety of Manfrotto heads on monopods, sliders, etc, & the ability to swap to a Satchler with the same plate would be a huge advantage.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Thanks,
Bern

They are the same company, after all - they are both Vitec. Those probably aren't the only compatible parts.

I have a FSB8 head and all my Manfrotto QR plates works on that head and the Sachtler QR plate works on Manfrotto so yes these are compatible. But Sachtler have two different types of QR on their heads and it's only the sliding one that is compatible.

I just posted up a question about wanting to go with Manfrotto so I wouldn't have to buy plates. Are you saying the slide in Manfrotto plates will fit a Sachtler head? Like this one:

Thanks for your info

Yes, that plate works on the FSB8 with sliding QR plate. I had a Manfrotto 504 head before I switched to the FSB8 and used both plates on either head. Even the shorter 503 style plates works fine.

I put a plate from a 701HDV head onto the new Sachtler ACE head - so yes, some of the Sachtler heads are compatible.

hows this head working out for you?
Anyone know if there is a CF sticks version of the ACE ? (I'm looking for the best and lightest)

I only had it for a day to test out - it's a great entry level head, not as solid as the higher priced Sachtlers - but a very similar feel.
If I didn't already have a manfrotto, I would definitely give the ACE a look. The action of the fluid head felt much smoother to me.
Just not enough for me to dump my current head/sticks for - I'm looking at moving into an FSB6 or something like that.

But - if I were shopping for a head at that price point, it may very well be the top of the class right now.

I have a 501 head right now, do you think the ace head is beefy enough to handle a konovo slider + 501 + 5dmkii + 24-105mm? I havent heard too much about how the ace handles with a bigger load.

That's great news, thanks! I didn't know the recent Sachtler plates were Manfrotto-compatible. I have an older Sachtler DV6SB head and it uses a unique plate style, apparently incompatible with anything except other similar vintage Sachtlers. The Manfrotto style plates are much cheaper and you can buy the quick release adapters separately, which would make building a fully interchangeable system much easier.

Now, if we could just get Vinten to go along as well ...

As an additional note: some (perhaps all) of Gitzo' fluid heads are compatible with these same Satchler, & Manfrotto, quick release plates.
