Does anyone know if the Manfrotto 516 Pro Video Head is a REAL fluid head, or one of those crappy imposters? I need a good quality, decently priced flat base fluid head for use on a slider.

Yes, it is a true fluid head. I've had one for years, it's a very decent tripod head.
Thanks for the clarification.
In terms of performance, are there any heads you would compare it to?
And which of Manfrotto's flat base heads are not true fluid heads? I find some of their descriptions quite misleading...

The 501, 503 and their newer HDV versions are friction heads. The 516 is the cheapest Manfrotto head to have actual fluid cartridge.
I have had limited experience with other tripod heads, and I haven't done a head-to-head comparison, however I would say that for what it cost the 516 is a bargain. Not in the same range as say a Sachtler DV6SB of course, but a very good performer.
