I think the 504 is a good value at $400 or less with a rebate. It is a significant upgrade from a 503.
Note that the pan arm clamp (spline) is not the same as a 503 - 516. It is the same as a 519. Manfrotto has the clamps and they fit the typical pan arm. That was a shock when I went to mount a 522 zoom control from my 503 and it didn't fit! It isn't a big deal if you plan for it.
