Manfrotto 503HDV still a good option?

I don't have a base but someone locally is willing to sell the head for $160, im wondering if that's still a good option as something affordable goes?
 
If that's what your budget can afford, then, yes, it's an okay option. I use one a lot, and I have my eyes set on a really nice (read: expensive) tripod very soon, it works okay for what I use it for now.
 
Not really. The 503 is pretty ubiquitous. I see it (and the 501) out and about far more often than any other head.

Are there specific things you look for when shopping for used tripod heads? Does the pan / tilt fluidity wear out after several years?
 
Well im getting a blackmagic cinema lens and have a 12lb crane
therefore this head with the 055xpb should support up to 18lb seems good?
