Manfrotto 503 on the fritz

I am not sure if this is the right place for this queastion, but here it goes...I have a Manfrotto 503 tripod. When I try to pan on the horizontal axis, i get drag as I expect to, but at a certiam point in the pan, the drag slips to a free moving state, then returns to the adjusted amount of drag. What might be going on here?

Which direction are you paning? Both directions, or just right or left?

actually iti is like a gap in drag if I go left to right or visa versa
