Manfrotto 501: a real fluid-head tripod?

Ha-ha!

I have one too! It's a Bogus piece-o-crap is really what it is. It only has a fluid head if you consider Teflon washers fluid.

The company I work with just bought two new Bogens with the 503 heads for our brand new HVX-200s. I begged them to get real tripods like a Cartoni Focus or a Sachtler DV-6 but did they listen? Noooo.

All of the shooters and producers are already cursing the crapiness of the Bogens. Honestly, the 501 is decent for the money since they are so cheap, I guess you can't compare them to a real tripod but for doing smooth pans and tilts, all of the Bogens are junque, I have owned many of them as well as a Sachtler Video 20III that I sold when I sold my Betacam. Sniff...how I miss having a real tripod.

Oh well, I will buy another Sachtler as soon as I buy my HVX.

Yeah I was physched when I first got my Bogen 501 because I was using a BestBuy tripod before that.

Its all relative. If you are shooting Panavision you will need a gear head or a mitchel mounted film tripod head. For Broadcast and 2/3 you will need a real fluid head like Sachtler.

But for a DVX/HVX you can get away with a 503 becuase they are so light anyway. Sachtler DV2's are pretty cheap, but anything above that you should just rent anyway. Spend the 5 grand on something else.
