Hi all,
Thanks in advance for the useful advice..
I'm working in a big project (90 mins run time) where we are constantly pulling from a big bank of about 4 hours of media (DV). As the project as passed through many hands along the way, the quicktime files are a mess generally speaking, but over the last few months I've gradually had time to rename everything properly, delete many duplicates, subclip and so on as best I can.
At this point we have one big folder on our hard drive called "FOOTAGE" in that folder are mostly well named clips, and scattered some clips with old names that are connected in the project. As I go I reconnect media as necessary.
Because some people constantly import footage into the project rather than drawing from the many bins we already have, we often end up with duplicates in the bins. I soon find these when I re-organize. If I come to an old clip that needs renaming, it will clearly show the duplicates as they all get renamed, and I delete all except one.
My question are as follows:
1. Will it harm my project to delete duplicate clips from the bins?
2. What if there are two clips in the bins that are named the same but don't change when renaming one of them - does this mean FCP has a link to the same file in two different places?
3. What would happen if we deleted all the media in our bins and reimported all again in a more orderly fashion? Would that wreck our project or would it automatically relink the clips? If we did this, and then moved a clip referenced in the timeline to another folder on the hard drive would we be able to reconnect it from the browser window or would it just be disconnected in the timeline?
4. There must be a more simple way of doing this? Isn't there a program I can use to see where my clips are being used and how to organize them better? Media Manager doesn't really help because if I did bundle the clips being used on the timeline into a new folder and start a new project we would still need access to all the other clips in the browser, and I would have to manually import all the files that aren't in the project by looking at them one by one - which would be a pain.
I'm sure i must be missing something obvious here....thanks
