hey guys does any know what style of editing was done on the movie Man on fire. because I"m trying to get that kind of look. that movie was really put together.
It may have died in the box office, but I enjoyed the story myself... very strong themes of redemption... to me, the visuals were Ok, but at times they were somewhat distracting.
My brother thought the look of that movie was stupid until I explained to him the ways of inducing feelings of chaos and confusion in the viewer... to further the tension of the story so that you DON'T really know what's going on rather then laying it out all pretty for you. He watched it again and now it's one of his favorite movies visually.
It does have a fairly weak story... but the feel of the movie is pretty good. I think it's crazy how exploiting computer graphics can actually pull you further into a movie rather then push you out... I'd put Star Wars at the other end of that same yard stick... even though the visuals for MOF are basic NLE tricks in comparison.
Well, with a production budget of 70mil and marketing costs of 30 it didn't do great, ending up with $119mil worldwide. But you can't call it dying, especially considering how well it performed on dvd.
These days the studios look at DVD gross as well (take bourne identity for example, made most of it's money on DVD), also they pay much more attention to overseas markest (europe and asia) where the audience looks for different things in movies.
If you take a look at the last couple of years, stories are NOT what people are looking for (2005, 2004)
you have to appreciate a movie coming out of the hollywood system that includes cutting off fingers and other turture, and a not so-happy-ending, it's very rare
