Male vs. Female DVX Users

I'm just curious how many women there are on this forum. I know of at least 1 but it seems like it's mostly males.

I also wonder why this is such a male-dominated hobby/profession, particularly in this age.

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

It's hard to talk about this without being somewhat stereotypical... but I think it has to do a lot with the technical side of things.. this is definately not true of all women, but most of us men like lots of gear and gadgets... and working things out technically. This turns a lot of women off...but of course this isnt always the case.

my girlfriend says that there are plenty of women DVX users, they're just out there filming and not wasting time on a forum like us men  >:( pff... shows how much she knows  :P

She may have a point :)

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

I don't think that could be more true.

I was thinking recently about how few women are on this forum as well.

But from my observations, I see VERY few professional female camera operators. I see way more women as directors, producers...even DPs, but very few camera operators.

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

edit. .... the person in my avatar is a female dvx user. probably japanese....

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

Don't take offense to this DV, but for some reason I always thought you were female. Maybe it was your avatars that pursuaded me :)

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

why was it disappointing that I wasn't? haha!

ok. maybe i should specify my gender. I sorta followed in Noah Kadner's footsteps. if he could be Halle Berry, than I said why not. :P
sorry im not some hot dvx chic.

and what does this mean???

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

OH. Never mind. “IN this age,” not “AT this age.” 2004, not 23. Mea culpa.

As I rarely post, I’ll just go back to lurking. ;)

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

....anyway, disjecta, were you looking for technically inclined dvx users specifically? i'm sure there are plenty....in this age. Like this one time I witnessed this college female student purchasing the dvx100A at B&H- and i said to myself. just like that. bam.
but she was just probably buying it out of fad or her filmmaker friends would think she's cool that she could own one. yeah all this went through my mind. Then I approached her and said, excuse me, where did you get that catalog-(she was holding 100A catalog) then she looked at me funny... and said, "just ask for it..." (stupid!) and i said ok... and crawled away.
I also know this female filmmaker -NYU student- who storyboards, shoots, directs- the whole thing. she shoots film.

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

Okay, first of all I wasn't "disappointed"   :D

Secondly, I'm not looking for anything in this conversation except for a curiosity on my part as to why women don't get into this more. There are many women photographers I know but no videographers and filmmakers and it struck me that this board kind of reflected that trend.

Who knows, maybe there are some women on this board masquerading as men, kind of like in times past when a female poet could only get her work published by taking on a male pseudonym.

Think Joan Hudson  :)

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

she's the first person that came to mind when i read this post actually...

god.. did November fall off the face of the planet or what?

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

I haven't seen many women that are interested in the technical side of things. They always want to write, produce and direct.
I know a few camerawomen. But, the majority are male.

Just like some guys have mentioned, I think we guys just love gadgets and technical stuff. I remember when my father bought me my first watch, I opened it up to see how it worked inside, and ended up f***ing it up. And as if that wasn't enough, I did the same to my brother's.

Anyway, all the best

Fidel.

Re: Male vs. Female DVX Users

I think the act of filmmaking at the idie level is a very aggressive process, and women get shoved out of the way on the technical side early on in their career. From what I've seen, men tend to delve deep into the technical side, and women gravitate towards the management side of the business.

My girlfriend is a prime example. Although she has a Masters in computing, for her, the computer is simply a sophisticated tool to get her where she wants to go. For me, the computer is a joy to drive, in and of itself. As far as filmmaking goes, whenever she gets involved in one of my productions, she tends to manage the logistics, such as scheduling, script supervision, etc., while I am all over direction, editing, and camerawork.

Hmm, in fact after our last shoot, she had to wrestle around some heavy items, hook up the sound, etc., and she complained to me that the male crew members were taking things out of her hands and doing some of her jobs for her. We both agreed that it was mere chivalry on the part of the well-meaning crew, but dammit, she wanted to do that stuff herself! Gotta warn the guys on the crew next time we shoot...
