Making Venetian Blind Shadows

I'm shooting a nighttime shot in a small uptairs bedroom. There is a window with wide venetian blind blades. My director wants the shadow pattern of the venetian blinds to fall onto the actress on the bed about 10 feet away. I'm in film school and have limited access to good lights. Any suggestions? I will rent some gear if necessary.

And use a hard light like a tungsten fresnel or HMI. Otherwise, the shadows/edges projected won't be very well defined and you may end up with some abstract pattern on the wall.

One option would be to remove the blinds and mount them on a c-stand...that way you can control the distance from light to blind and the distance from blind to subject as these will effect the intensity and size of the shadows...in this case you can also open and close the blinds to get the desired effect...you probably could find similar blinds at home depot or similar place for pretty cheap. Using blinds in this fashion will require light control around the edges.

If you cannot remove the blinds you can use a piece of foam core or even cardboard to make a frame...make sure the frame is approximately 8 inches wide or so for light control then use gaff tape to mimic the blinds by putting strips across the opening in the foam core. Again, you will have to experiment in the positioning, for example the closer the light to the pattern the bigger it will look on the subject.

Good Luck!!
