making vegas faster without sony's help.

so I stumbled on this thread in dvinfo.

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/what-happens-vegas/187307-enable-multicore-preview-playback-who-knew.html

I knew about hidden settings but never messed with them. I did some experimentation to see if changing the defaults speeds up vegas.

first, I extended the dynamic ram buffer to 8192mb. turns out it only allows up to 3712mb ( because its a 32bit program I assume). That's still more then 1024 default, and the best part is it works. I'm able to pre-render almost 3 times the amount of frames I used to, allowing me to view longer sequences in RT without having to render them. Vegas's ram usage increases obviously - the instance using about 4.5 gigs of RAM. I'm guessing I can set up an 8gig buffer in vegas9 x64.

I enabled muticore playback.
The difference isn't too crazy - My machine works much harder tho, poping to 100% on all 8 cores sometimes and averaging around 60% (instead of 30%). HDV playback in 32bit colorspace with a single color corrector is much better. I would average 10-12fps, now its at 17-20 (thats running over fresh, non- bufferd footage). when it comes to nikon d90's avi's, the peformance is decreased, going from 15 to 4fps. I figure its codec releated and might be the reason why its not enabled by default.

I also messed with the rendering threads count. For stability, I keep mine set to 2. I took a peice of HDV footage in 32 bit colorspace, with 1 colorcorrector applied, and rendered it out three times using a differant amount of threads. I used the same peice/leanth of footage for every render.

2 threads took 60 seconds, cores popin from 75%-95%
4 threads took 55 seconds, cores popin from 90-100%
8 threads took 54 seconds, cores popin from 95-100%

not the most accurate benchmarks, but decent enough. It seems that using 8 threads on 8 cores isnt much faster. I havent tried this on a more complex edit. my guess is that it would crash the program.
