Making the switch

My wife and I, after a half-life of PC, are buying a mac. We want a laptop that I can edit independent films on. I'm psyched because I can use it as a field monitor too (one less thing to buy). Can someone please tell me how big I should go so editing is fast and fun. Any input will be appreciated.

Any of the new MacBook Pro's will do you fine. 17 inch would be better than 15 inch as FCP needs a lot of screen real estate. Just MAX out the ram and get as big a hard drive as you can. If you get a used or refurbished MacBook Pro I'd get one at least with Core 2 Duo and FW 800. If you don't have the dough for a Macbook Pro, you can edit FCP on a regular MacBook, although not as nimbly, and I wouldn't attempt any HD work. Also, you might want to wait after MacWorld in early January as Apple generally releases something new and shiny then, and rumors are they are refreshing the laptops and putting out a new ultra portable then.
