ill be getting a dvx soon that has only been filmed on mq tapes for about 50 hours but as much as i will be filming i cant afford to use these tapes! i can get my hands on sony prems pretty easy and cheap, So the main question is switching from mq to premimum be a really bad choice after 50 hours used on heads with mq???

tear this up guys and girls

i wouldnt. but just get your heads cleaned before hand, so they are nice and clean for all of the sony juices...

Why not just shoot low-end panasonic tapes? Atleast they use the same lubricant as MQ's (dry). I would stay away from Sony tapes when shooting on a DVX100, heard to many bad stories of drop-outs. If you go to www.wolfcamera.com the EJ panasonic tapes are very cheap if you do google check out. (buy 23 tapes to maximize savings) It comes out to less than $1.40 each.

ok i think ill jsut stick with the pan's not the mq but ill get the lower priced ones

and anchoryanker i can get the prems for as low as 50 cents LOL i get them through my votech school and they hook me up cause they bought atleast 2,000 prems for 2100's for a damn good price awhile ago! so i heard

Oh, OK, around here the walmart price for prems works out to to be about what the total cost of the MQs are after shipping.

Here's the thing. Are you shooting anything that matters? Cheaping out on tapes is not necesarily the best thing to do, unless what you are shooting won't matter either way. Panasonic MQ tapes are a little more expensive for a reason, and in many cities are often an industry standard. For what it is, tape is insanely cheap, even if you were spendind 7-10 a tape for the AMQ's that is still very cheap for what it is. If you want to spend a little less on tape I would look at the PQ's rather than the cheapo consumer Panasonic tapes (which I am not 100% sure do use the same dry lubricant). The PQ's are made from the same tape stock as the MQ's.
Again, if you are just shooting a bunch of test footage, or maybe some friends and family where a couple of dropouts is no big deal, get the cheapos, but then why would you be getting a DVX.

scharky facts = so true in everyway !!!! well if i got mqs say i have one, how many times could i use this tape? if i record it the whole way through and captured and rewinded and started back over you think i could get atleast three full records with one tape?

and one more question i heard someone use the term BLACKOUT on tapes does that mean they erased everything recorded on that tape and how would you do this?

its a big stepp from a canon gl1 and throwing sony prems in left and right to dvx and mqs lol but thanks if you help me out !!!1

Changing tapes is myth ithink. i have lately broekn my own rule of Only MQ/AMQ.

I used like 3 or 4 sony's the other day. not a single problem yet.

"a myth"
Tell that to my old camera that is so gunked up it doesnt record anything but venetian blinds anymore. I tried cleaning it many times. It happened when I switched from sony to jvc. The only good thing about it going bad was that I needed a new camera and an upgrade so I got a dvx.

love the info given to me about this topic thanks but can someone tell me howmany times i can record on one mq tape without it goign bad im hoping aroudn two to three so if your a genius which most dvxuser's are help me out!

Technically you can record lots of times on a single tape, should you? Well again that is up to you as after each pass the reliability of the tape will go down. Timur, I wish it was a myth, but heres the thing. I've got 600+hrs on my DVX and never once had a head problem. A producer that I work with has his own DVX that he uses for some shoots, he's got about 50hrs on it, usually runs sony's but there have been instances where he has used pannies and even a couple of TDK's yuk, and guess what, dropouts gallore. I can rarely get through a tape that he gives me without having at least one moment ruined due to audio and video dropouts. Is it a myth, maybe, but just look at the results, and I don't think I'm alone on this.

there is no myth mixing tapes.. Panasonic uses a dry lube and Sony uses a Wet lube.. they dont play nice, there are enough people around here to tell you some horror stories.

To me the MQ's still are my favs, even over the new Pana Premiums.. i never had a single dropout over 500 hours on my DVX with them..Of course, since ive gone P2 i havnt actually used tape for quite some time.. but my recomendation still stands.

I thought sony switched a couple years ago? ehh whatever.

Just stick with one brand and type, better safe than sorry.

after hearing about all the wetlube and dry haha and pans tdk and such im jsut gonna make my life easier, save money on heads and go with mqs anyone knwo where i can get them cheap ?? maybe a member on here has some after buying in bulk and will sell

http://www.recordingstore.com/ found the perfect site and cheap but im not sure about the shipping it could be like sky high
there's where i got mine. I got a 10 pack through from them through amazon.com and my total was like 49 bucks. Less than what sony prems cost at walmart and a better quality tape to boot. They only took a couple of days to ship too.

i've used sony prem tapes since i got my dvx (about 300 hours on the heads) and I am now thinking of switching to panasonic tapes, after i have the heads cleaned. anyone see any problem with doing so?
