making the switch??? mq to prem

I use Maxell tapes. According to my Panasonic dealer they are just rebranded Panasonic. They cost half of Pana PQs. Never had a problem.

Hi,

My first post!! I just got a DVX-100b for Christmas and have been doing a lot of reading here to learn all I can!!

My question is this:

A tape came with the camera - the AY-DVMCL Digital Video Head Cleaner..... I opened up and started to put it in the camera (was excited to start shooting) and seen that it was a head cleaner... THANK GOD I NOTICED THAT!! From What I have read that could have been devastating to the head!! (letting it run for about 30 seconds...)

Anyways, I went to Wal-Mart and got a EJ tape. Then I found this site and started reading. (I also started reading all the manual)

Well to finally get to the question, I have shoot about 1 minuet on the EJ tape (and played it back 2 times, so 3 minuets total) and now know I should be using MQ or PQ tapes. So the question is, am I alright to switch to the MQ or PQ tapes with out having to worry about using the EJ for so short of a time???

I know this is probably a stupid question but I want to take really good care of my DVX.

Thanks,

Shane

I have another question as well. Can I use 83, 96, 124, 186, or 276 minute tapes?? What disadvantage is there in useing them?

Quote, Panasonic's Jan Critenden, "do not use tape longer than 1 hour," the DVX manuel also repeats the same thing, not even the 83 minute Panasonic tape should be used in the cameras at all! I would strongly suggest using the highest quality tape "Panasonic"
stay with that one type of tape, do not use a cleaning tape unless it is absolutely neccessary in an emergency. Have the camera cleaned by a qualified repair service on a regular basis. It is a lot less expensive to do this consistantly than to replace the heads.

love the info given to me about this topic thanks but can someone tell me howmany times i can record on one mq tape without it goign bad im hoping aroudn two to three so if your a genius which most dvxuser's are help me out!

It it always best to use a tape only once, dropouts can occur and general loss of quality begins. I am a purest, having learned the hard way. I use the highest grade tape possible, never change brands and I never reuse a tape. The client can afford to pay for the tape.

This is actually false for DV, the only risk you run is dropouts, there will be no general picture degradation.
