Making an effect with a transition?

I was asked today at work if I could make an effect using a transition in FCP. I wasn't sure so I am asking it here. They are trying to have a video clip slide/wipe across the screen using the Box slide effect but he wants to EMBOSS the transition itself. He said he would like to make the video clip look 3 dimensional. I am not clear on how to do that if it is even possible to do it.

You would apply the emboss effect to the two seperate clips and then keyframe it off just before and after the transition. Not sure what is expected on the 3d question though- there is a basic 3D effect that warps video onto a 3d box. Perhaps they mean that.
