Making a Tripod Shot Look Handheld?

Is there a way I can make a tripod shot look handheld? I know about the wiggle feature, but I don't want very shaky video, I just want it to look similar to what you see in movies and such, where there is movement, but it is nice and smooth.

Tripod shots are nice but having someone take the video without being shaky is a lot nicer, and I was just wondering if that's possible to make it look like that in After Effects.

The only reason I ask is because I'm going to shoot something but don't have anyone to take the video, and I am supposed to be in it.

Probably best to frame wider than you would for a normal tripod shot so that whatever plugin you use has room when doing it's magic. (ie it will likely zoom in a bit and move frame around to simulate hand held).

Thanks, looks great! I'm installing it now and we'll see how it goes.

I'll definitely shoot wider, I've had that problem before when doing other things like stabilizing motion from a very shaky shot, and ending up having to zoom in too much.

Track another shot

Track another shot

Shoot another shot handheld for the same duration of your clip. This can be a shot of anything, but make sure you have a couple of high contrast targets to allow good tracking.

Track the new shot and then parent the tripod shot to the new shot.

If you just want to take out the 'deadness' from the shot, wiggle with low numbers is ok and very fast method, wiggle(.5,2) or something. You won't have to shoot much wider, it will crop 2 or 3%. If you want it to look and feel like handheld, do the mentioned tracking. Another quick method is to use motion sketch and 'draw' a movement with your mouse or pen if you have a tablet.
