$3K HMC 150
$1.5K Letus
$1K lenses
$2K mics/wireless (shotgun, Oktava, 2 senheisser G2's)
$1k lights
$.5k additonal lights miscellany, grip etc.
How about 9k? I wasn't assuming you necessarily would subtract the maximum shorts budget. This is all a round guess. So I was $2K off.
And with the exception of a homemade dolly and a borrowed crane, you're within a $1000 ish of the gear budget for Cold Calls if we'd purchased everything.
So lets say 11K for the gear we owned or borrowed. Add $2500 to pay everyone $100 a day, feed them, and for a few odd and end props (the phone and fog juice was probably all we bought.) So you could have made that short for $13.5K pruchasing everything and paying everyone. When I say "really good" I don't mean the most expensive thing out there, but the reasonable thing that really doesn't come with any serious compromise, i.e., won't hold you back. If you buy a $1500 Zacuto shoulder mount - well there goes your budget. But there are alternatives. My one fudge - and this is a prime example of "more than enough though not the best" - would be the HMC 150 I listed when we actually shot on a HPX 170 which will drive things up even before you consider P2 cards. But a 150 is more than enough to tell a great story with high production value.
Whether it's $12 or 15K to BUY and produce everything the point still holds - $60K is nuts for a short. We're quibbling over $2000, vs, an additional $40,000. But again we're talking ball park, i.e., neighborhood.
The good point you make is that if you rent instead of buy everything, you'd do much better than $12k. You can always do the eBay rental method - i.e., buy it, use it, sell it on ebay "only used for one short", for 2/3rds to 1/2 what you paid depending on the item and if the next great flavor of said item came out during production of your short and drove the resale value of said item way down.
