Making a green gun look real in post

Is it possible to make a futuristic pistol and paint it "green screen" green and film the actors with it. Then later, in post, some how make that green gun look like a real gun? I ask because I want to be able to guerrilla some shots in public places (empty parks, parking garages) with prop guns without freaking any bystanders out.

thanks in advance

Robert Rodriguez mentioned doing that in Planet Terror because he didn't want his kid to be around realistic weapons. So, it's possible. Not 100% sure how it's done though. Could be a simple color remapping, but I've never tried it.

In theory, post-production colour correction should be able to recolour a uniquely coloured object like a bright green gun. Film a few test shots with similar lighting and backgrounds etc to the actual film and see how your post-production team get on - better to find out now if it's too difficult.

The other option is to make your pistol so futuristic (e.g. a ray gun) that no one will believe it's a real gun, if that suits your film.
