So im wanting to make a glide cam…… easy right???? Well, I have a mono-pod and some weights, that’s the easy part. I cant find a handle that pivots on a bearing. Does anyone have any insight as to where I could find or make such item. That is the only part hold me back. All help, and comments are appreciated.

The best place to look for advice and such is http://www.homebuiltstabilizers.com/

The forums there are packed with good folks that DIY with stabilizers. With their help I ended up with a slightly modified Steadicam SK2(can now be dynamically balanced)....in fact tomorrow morning I'll be using it for the first time on a shoot at the Pulitzer Museum here in St. Louis.

Sorry I don't have any direct ideas on your DIY Steadicam, but I'm sure you'll get lots of inspiration from the guys over at HBS.

All hail Garrett!

Hey Nick I was looking at the AR Rig thread on homebuilt stabilizers a while back. Did you ever make any more progress on yours?

I still have all the ideas in my head, and the parts, but due to the fact that the next level in developing this will cost a few hundred dollars, I've sorta put it on the back burner.

I had a semi-functioning rig, but during development I damaged the bearing in the system, so it was a tad "jerky".

The next step is a gyro controlled servo motor to correct any small errors, which is mounted on a manual system(gravity powered). The manual system would correct for large errors in horizon, while the gyro/servo would make small corrections. The key to every level of a DIY AR rig is getting the center of gravity as close as possible to the absolute center of the bearing, although just a smidge off center for the manual system, so that gravity can do it's thing.

I have some money coming in from a few different gigs at once right now(when it rains it pours), so perhaps I'll pick back up the tool kit and the soldering iron, and see if I can't build the next level of prototype.

It's definitely coming....I just need to get around to actually undertaking the project in it's next level. Rest assured though that once I pick it back up I'll post on it at HBS every step of the way, as well as having a fully documented step by step on how to repeat my results.

On a side note, I'll be uploading to Vimeo today the footage from the Pulitzer and posting it in my thread on HBS :
