Making a fake widescreen...

Im trying to put some fake widescreen bars on my video in vegas but this is the way im doing it.

Im creating 2 black videos (white for this one) and just going to the setting to make it only show a little bit at the top on one and a little bit at the bottom on the other. It works out... But it uses 2 video tracks. I am a really neat freak and I hate this. I wish their was an effect, is there another way? They have to be, cause in my final output video, even though they have the bars at the top & bottom, the very top and bottom still show the video, its very visable with the white bars cause the video is pretty much dark so at the top and bottom you see a black line with a bit of moving so you can tell its letting the video in the back seap through. Can someone help me?

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

Go into the pan/crop tool and select one of the presets. You'll find presets for both 16:9 and 1.85:1.

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

for each video track you gotta do that? can you also set what color? or wait, just put that color as the background huh? Ok I think I get it!

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

Ok got it working, thanks a whole lot, but, whats the best way to throw that on each clip? I got the clip cut up into small peices and its like 100 of them. So I gotta do that to each one, is there a faster way to just do it on the whole track?

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

OR . . . use the rectangular gradient in the Meda Generator and adjust until you get the mask you desire, changing colors, width of the bars, and eliminated the gradient. But you'll have to run this on a separate video track over everything.

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

Apply it to the longer clip before you cut it. Each subclip will keep the crop setting.

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

well everything is cut already...

I got another problem. do you have AIM?

Well when i render out a Windows Media file (wmv) it messes up..
What it does is it shows the video in what seems wider but the whitebackground in the back isn't as wide so it has black on both ends at the top and bottom.. HELP PLEASE HURRY!!

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

Figured out what i think is a way around it, i went to the pan/crop on the white in the back.. and made the selection smaller than it by 2 clicks over on each corner, so now it doesn't seem to be doing it now while im rendering it.. hopefully that worked.. can i get some closure?

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

Well its kind of a surprise, no more screen grabs of what I make till its done, gotta show the final video, screen grabs dont do it justice, havent did much yet in it

The thing I did though, didn't work right, cause it now has the black line at the top and bottom, i thought i did widen the white card by doing the pan/crop, right?

You can also apply it to one clip, right click the clip and choose copy. Then select all the other clips, right click one of the selected ones and choose "Paste Event Attributes." But this also pastes Video Event Effects also.

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

You can create a .png letterbox mask with alpha channel in Photoshop and place it on a track over the rest of your project. Stretch to fit... works really nice. This is how I do it.

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

You can do as David Jimerson said, but instead of applying it to all clips, nest the video tracks under the mask track :

Create a new video track, put it on top of all tracks. This track will be the mask (gradient rectangle as David said or photoshop png as Mike said). Click on Compositing mode for this track and select MULTIPLY (MASK).

Then select all the video tracks under it and click on one of those tracks on "MAKE COMPOSITING CHILD" (icon with an arrow pointing down)

Tada! This is a clean solution!

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

I would have suggested that except it's while it's simple to type, it's not as simple to do. I was trying to keep it as goof-proof as possible.

Re: Making a fake widescreen...

Ahh, i know my programs, should have just said it that way. I figured it out myself though, thanks everyone!
