Makeup effects - bruising?

I need to make realistic looking facial bruising on an actress, but can't afford to hire a SFX makeup person for this. Any tips on doing this effect?

Thanks!

easy, All you need to do is follow this method. usually light pink and reds for fresh stuff and the more older stuff more darker colors like blues, purples, and maybe a yellow depending on the person.

Interesting.... Actually, we have to make the bruises progressively lighter, as they have 'healed' to varying degrees in subsequent scenes. Thanks for the tip!

A lot of times there are "color wheels" that are meant for specific effects. The "bruise wheel" is of course perfect for this kind of stuff:

To apply this stuff and make it look realistic you want to use a really rough sponge with lots of texture on it and use a technique known as "stippling" which is basically using a small cutup piece of the sponge, dipping it in a color and then lightly pushing it against the surface of the skin and immediately bringing it back up. You won't be rubbing the stuff on, just kind of dabbing it on as you want some texture look to it. It won't look real life to the eye, but it can definitely be made real looking to the camera. You can also use mortician's wax to build up an area of the face and make it look swollen for extreme effects...

thanks cool lights, i didnt mention that, but I wouldnt sugest stippling it on,just smear it on with your on fingers trust me i study this stuff
