Makeing my own black wrap

Ok, I have a shoot for a music vid all weekend and I need some black wrap but I don't think any place like Lowe's would have it, Am I wrong? But my question is, could I take some heavy grade alumiumn foil and spray the dull side flat black? would that work or do you guys have a better substitute?

Thanks

Sounds messy. If you live near any metropolitan area, you should be able to find black wrap at a local lighting/theatrical/video supply store. What's your zipcode?

Well, it might work. Problem is that the paint might not like the high temperatures next to the light, and may ignite or emit toxic fumes! It'd be much better to get proper blackwrap designed for the purpose!

If you're hiring lights, then the hire company should stock it. Or wherever you buy your lighting colour/gels. It's probably too late to mail order unfortunately.

This sounds insane, considering how easy that stuff should be to get. But if you are going to proceed with this crazy plan, go to an auto-parts store and get ENGINE PAINT. It is made to work on high temp metal and should not burn off, causing a toxic cloud that kills all of your musicians and crew. Generally, musicians and crew look down on choking on fumes.

At any rate, test it first.

my zip is 47591, the closest place that I know of that has black wrap is a place in Indianapolis that is over 2 hours away. We live in the middle of no where!!!! anyway I think I will just forget it and try to get by
thanks

I would never consider making my own black wrap... but I want to get this into the thread while it's still fresh. At any Lowe's, Home Depot, WalMart, etc. they have Hi-Temp Flat Black spray paint for barbeque pits.

I agree it would be nuts to make your own black wrap, but it might not be so nuts to make your own cookies for fresnels. Your post inspired me... I've done some lighting work where we take black wrap and put it at the very outside of a set of barndoors (on a fresnel only) and then tear random holes in it for our background wash. Now I'm thinking about using metal roof flashing, which is dirt cheap from Lowe's etc) and then creating a more permanent and creative fresnel cookie... and then breaking out the barbeque pit paint.

Good luck.

Careful with some grill paint, though. There are some that have to be "baked" before they set dry. (Unless you're willing to wait a few weeks for the paint to cure on its own.)

I made my own wood cookie:

Just borrowed an existing name brand cookie and traced the pattern, cut it out with a jig saw and built a little spiggot for it.

Well, everybody does their own cookies. I never seen anybody that actually bought them! What would be insane is to spend 80 dollars for a cut piece of wood!
