Make a teaser with a bunch of special fx...put it on youube and get a deal

BUZZ!!!

Stories like these always amaze me, and they appear to be happening with increasing frequency. Strike while the iron is hot. Make an awesome short, and get the rest of the internet on your side. Hollywood may well be knocking on your door next.

At least this story is a little different. Seems they just bought the short and the idea, which at least makes a little more sense then giving an unknown 40 mil based on a youtube video, haha

When I got the jest of what was happening I was like OMG! LOL. But the addition of Donkey Kong and Frogger did it for me. I was all about DK back in the day and I had an Atari system, so it was great seeing the "Atari" sign on the building in the background, great shout out. The systems still sale on eBay.

there's a concept, not a story...and thats what got it sold along with the buzz. concept is king in hollywood. plenty of people trying to make a sell movies, not nearly enough creative concepts.

I totally applaud the creator for a job well done, very cool short for sure.

As far as being picked up for a possible option or to be made into a movie (based on the concept), is Hollywood really out of ideas already? I know the stupidity of movies coming out in the next couple of years (the ones based on board games alone) shows production companies are either getting really lazy or just aren't creative but movies are sinking to an alltime low, at least in Hollywood.

So as a short you praise it, but as the concept for a studio picture it is lazy and not creative?

I don't think that's an unreasonable position to have since shorts and features can be very different storytelling devices.

As an aside, last night I saw the Futurama episode involving 8-bit video games.

Absolutely. The creator came up with a really interesting short, I thought it was really well done and creative as heck.

In terms of basing an actual movie around this that lasts for more than 5-10 minutes, I'm not convinced it can be done. Hollywood will find a way though to ruin a good idea no doubt.

Once again though, good for the guy who did this, take the money and run if they paid you for a short film.

I'm not anti-Hollywood, I just can't see how this would work as a movie. At the same time, with the crap the film machine has been producing, a movie badly done with special effects would make $100 million, so there goes my theory on that too.

I agree, I hope it can be done well of course, but I'm not sure how this can be stretched to a feature.... and not be really silly and dumb.

But hopefully I'm wrong.

"I agree, I hope it can be done well of course, but I'm not sure how this can be stretched to a feature.... and not be really silly and dumb." They'll probably have the pixelated people try and return the world back to normal. The main characters should be kids and they should have a dog which in the pixelated world can speak.
Will it be silly and dumb, probably, but it might be really fun also.

I think after seeing such disappointments (in my opinion anyway) like War of the Worlds and Cloverfield, I'm just skeptical something like this could be pulled off without looking really cheesy or having a lot of holes in the story. Visually, yeah, it could look terrific.

However, I loved District 9, so if you get this in the hands of the right writer and director, maybe it turns out into a fun movie.

I suppose I shouldn't write it off yet but I'll say it needs a lot of work to get it made into a feature at this point... good luck to whomever tackles it.

I have to agree with you here. This is a great short film and was fun to watch. i definitely know I can't put up with 90 minutes of this though.

My point is that this is not a story, this is a premise.

It seems to me nowadays that indie filmmakers are focusing too much on the successes big blockbuster effects films and trying to replicate the formula with no marketing budgets or real production budget for that matter. We should be focusing more on the "Goodfellas" and the "Mystic Rivers" and being story tellers.

Not to say theres something wrong with shooting an effects film, however i feel we are first and foremost story tellers. The camera just happens to be our medium.

As silly as this analogy may seem there's some truth to it: its like thinking you can write a best selling novel because you found a cool font.

A great job of a short turning into a feature was Phone Booth. Great premise and I loved the one location aspect of it. Easy film to shoot but great to watch.

That was an amazing short that could easily be made into a Hollywood Feature. No different than any other film that was conceived from a short. Just my opinion.

Saw was another one.

when was Saw ever a short? james wan and leigh wannell shot a trailer, some of which was in their garage for the car chase sequence and used it to get funding for the film which they already had a full screenplay for. at least thats what they said in all their interviews. same formula this director used to get his project funded with this animated arcade teaser.

It's a clever short. I wouldn't go and see a movie based on it, though. On the other hand, I liked it better than anything I've ever seen Adam Sandler in.

It was my understanding that this short film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Olj57iN3pm8 was what they shot and shopped around to get funding. But yes, they had the screenplay written already.
