I'm trying to EQ (high and low pass the entire song)

compress and limit, light distortion. trying make it sound like this song is on the radio and signal isn't the best.

i might need to actually record samples of am / fm stations not tuned to mix in with it

has anyone had good results, or can point me in right direction? thanks

Apply a high and low pass filter and narrow the EQ down to around 1k then add some small room reverb with a short decay and push the levels so it distorts a little.

Or if you have access to an edit system such as pro tools there is a convolution reverb package that will do it all.

Or take the track and feed it into a small speaker or even play it on your i-phone and record the result.

I'm wondering if you would want to cut an FM synth back and forth over and between your song. Just that high frequency FM synth sound that FM radio sometimes has when there is interference.

I understand the effect you are after, as it has been the standard for so very long. But, the reality of the matter is in 2013 most car stereos are really quite good. Why in my neighborhood you can hear the bass booming blocks away.

Unless of course this is a period piece with an older car and an AM radio.

The easiest way as mentioned is SpeakerPhone, it will do the speaker simulation and noise and distortion, pretty much a one stop solution. Otherwise I would give iZotope Vinyl a shot for "degrading" the song and then add in static, tuning, etc.
