Make a mic shockmount for $1.20

This is stupid - why spend several hundred on a mic. and a couple of hundred on a pole and make your own cheapo shockmount that won't do the job properly, when you can buy a decent one for only 30.

Crazy........................

IMO I see this as a quick fix in a tight situation; definitely not an actual replacement for a shockmount. As you said John, makes no sense if you use it in the long run.

The only real issue with that shock mount is that the connection with a mic clip is way to likely o slip out. Otherwise it should work well. And yes I would go and buy one probably or make a more "professional" one but I have a shop with a lathe and a milling machine so...

The zep however has serious issues. They went for looks over function. The "shock mount" portion is connected to the cage! so any wind noise is going to directly transmit to the mic. They used a boa! the purpose of the fur is not to look big and fuzzy but to keep the wind from transmitting to the inside. You need a shield around the mic and boa string isn't going to cut it al all. and your mic is at a fixed angle? The only reason the maker would want the angle he put on it (that I can think of) is to get it high overhead, which puts it too far from the actors. It looks to me like it was made by someone who has seen photos but doesn't really have any understanding of how a zep needs to work. I have made a few in my time so I'm not aghast at these kinds of DIY projects but you do need it to DO what it's supposed to do, not just look like a photo in B&H.

I only posted the link to "Make your own zeppelin" to show how far people will go and never met it to be taken seriously, that is why I asked about a link to how to make a video camera. If I caused any one to think this is "The way to go" I apologize for the confusion.

Other than looks, this isnt THAT bad.
Although sometimes you just have to say to yourself "is this really worth the time invested to make something rather than buy it"? (i would say no personally in this case)

I would suggest if someone is going that route. Spend the couple dollars and buy
some PSC rubber bands from BHphoto (or another dealer).

They have a different consistency than a regular rubber band, but very inexpensive.

I wonder if there's an opportunity for a Ledgerkit Corporation, making various filmmaking equipment items in 'kit' form...

And yes, I've thought about 'making my own camera' off and on for about 25-30 years. What really surprised me is that Red has taken 'so long' to get going...
