Major problems with Premiere CS4

Hello there!

I'm having major problems with CS4. I recently bought a new computer - essentials are as follows:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz
2 x Kingston 3x2GB, DDR3 1333MHz (=12 GB RAM)
Ati Radeon HD 5770 v2
Asus P6T SE, LGA1366, X58, DDR3, ATX
2 x 500GB, Barracuda 7200.12 (RAID1), system disk
2 x 1TB Barracuda 7200.12, media disks
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Adobe CS4 Production Premium + latest updates

The problem I have has mostly to do with Premiere although I think the rest of Production Premium softwares should be running better on this computer as well.

For starters, I was highly disappointed when I couldn't view a single HD clip from the Premiere timeline (it was an .m2ts rip from a previously self-burned Bluray disc) at all. Rendering is very slow and even after that the video doesn't run normally, showing just a few individual frames per second. When I point the timeline at a certain spot, it takes many seconds until even that very frame is shown in the monitor window.

And this is not all - I decided to try with a basic DV AVI clip, previously captured with my PPro 1.5 on my earlier computer (3.2ghz Pentium from 2005). It's a native file so it doesn't even need rendering and still the same problem occurs. With normal playback only about 6-10 frames are shown per second. It's absolutely ridiculous - my 2004 laptop runs more smoothly with PPro 1.5.

While I'm running the Premiere, the level of used RAM comes only up to around 24 percents. The processor, then again, comes close to a hundred when play is pressed on the timeline.

I haven't had such immense problems with other Production Premium softwares (though as I said, I think they should be running faster as well). Otherwise the computer is running smoothly.

Some guy pointed out that the graphics card I'm using isn't on the Adobe website's list of supported ones with Premiere, but afaik it shouldn't even be a graphics card problem with this high-end machinery.

So - I sure could use some help and ideas about how to get the Premiere working. My intention was to start HD editing with this computer after all! Thanks beforehand!

Well, Premiere does use the graphics card for playback acceleration.

Do you have anything like virus protection running?

Yeah, it does. There is not even a setting that could prevent it from using the graphics card (unlike in AE or Photoshop).

I've got avast! Antivirus software. Tried now disconnecting from the net, turning the virus protection off but it didn't have any effect. Don't know why it would have had...

This is what I've discussed with the guys at Adobe: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2489034

But the problem still stands.

Anything that uses processor power -- and antivirus software uses a lot of it -- will detract from performance.

Sure, but we're talking about playbacking a single DV AVI clip! Even a sucky five years old laptop can manage heavy DV editing with Premiere just like that. And this is a pretty killer system I have here. It really can't be a hardware issue imho.

Well, you've got a bottleneck somewhere -- it's probably not in the software, because as you say, it works fine on other systems. So it's somewhere in the OS or lies with a hardware compatibility issue.

Where is this footage located?

The software I have on the old omputer is Premiere Pro 1.5 - what I have here is Premiere CS4, haven't been able to test it on another system. CS4 wouldn't run on my old laptop.

I'm guessing it's something between CS4 and the system, but my bet isn't with the hardware, more so with Windows settings or sth.

Where the footage is located shouldn't matter, because, again and again, it's just one crappy DV file. But I've tested running it from both of my drives - 500GB (x2, RAID1) system disk and 1TB media disk.

What else I've tried:

Removing Quicktime. Re-creating the PluginCache. Re-creating the preferences folders. Disabling startup items and all non-essential services, including antivirus and everything imaginable (well, there are not that many programs on my computer yet), then rebooting, uninstalling Production Premium and after another reboot installing it again - successfully (what I mean by successful is that I tried re-installing just Premiere first, to which the install program said "Done, with errors". That's why I decided to uninstall, remove and re-install the whole package. That happened without any errors).

Keeping the startup items and services disabled, using a new administrator account, disabling user account controls. I haven't had Windows Aero on at all.

These were done according to this article: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408983.html

I'm also highly doubtful Disk Cleanup, defragmenting or such would do any good since Adobe Production Premium was the first application I ever installed on this brand new computer (well, right after Firefox). I put the computer together myself, so there shouldn't be extra programs messing things up either.

I'd have to agree with Harm Millard in your thread there:

You've got lots of running processes, and anything that runs will take away from performance. Also, if all the codec packs are generic ones you downloaded for free, you might have picked up something else with them, too. I wouldn't recommend using those; you should stick with codecs from the source.
