I just digitized 6 hours of footage for a wedding I need to edit this week. I started to preview one of the clips in FCP and it was riddled with glitches in the audio and each successive glitch put the audio further and further out of sync with the video. I popped the tape back in and recaptured the clip with 'capture now'. As I watched the video on my NTSC monitor as it captured it looked and sounded fine. Then I checked the newly captured clip in my timeline...same problem. I freaked out and quickly checked several of the other captured clips and they all had the same problem. I ran a head cleaner through the camera I capture with and tried again, same thing. I then checked the footage from a wedding I did last month that was still on my hard drive and it was fine. I knew that the project I captured last month was good but I checked it just to rule out possibilities that my software or computer was doing something to it.
I have been doing this the same way for over a dozen weddings, same equipment, same settings. So maybe something is worn out? My camera perhaps? Here is what I have:
Sony VX2000 is being used as my source deck.
RCA's from the VX2000 feed video into my NTSC monitor.
Firewire from the VX2000 feeds into my Dual G4 Mac.
Mac is running OS 10.3.7 and FCP4 HD, 2gb of ram, dual 1.25ghz processors.
All audio/video is being captured onto a designated media hard drive.
The media hard drive consists of 2 raid arrayed 7200rpm 250gb Western Digitals.
My best theory (and my fear) is that the VX2000 is dead or dying. What adds to that theory is that towards the end of the capture of this wedding I was getting errors (actually only on the very last 2 clips I tried to digitize) I had never seen before saying that FCP wasn't getting good info and would abort the capture (not timecode break or dropped frame, something else). I thought this might of been a glitch on the tape itself since it was only those two clips out of 6 tapes. I remember watching the part of the tape that would cause the error and it looked fine when viewed through the camera.
And thats something that confuses me too. When I play the camera and watch it in the monitor (not the computer) it looks fine still. Could it be my firewire cable? I don't have another one to test.
Has this audio problem happened to any of you? I am so screwed if I can't get this fixed right away. If anyone knows of any other forums I can post this on I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
